Does accepting a spot at a school constitute "matriculation?"

I ask, because I'm waitlisted at another school that I really want to attend, but their waitlist letter (which I submitted some time ago) states that they cannot consider me if I matriculate elsewhere...

...this makes me wonder if this is only applicable to schools that have disparate starting times...?

I believe you are considered a matriculate if you register for classes. I know its not just being accepted.

Matriculation means that you are registered at a school, and that orientation/classes has started. You can be registered to attend school X, but you are not matriculated until Day One of class (orientation counts as class).
In regards to your letter, this means that you can continue to be considered for the school at which you are wailisted until classes start at the other school. At that point, you are removed from the waitlist.

What if you defer for a year at school A, classes start Aug. 7th, and then School B pulls you off of their waitlist on August 10th - can they still offer you an acceptance?

Depends on the school, but the condition of my deferral was that I withdraw from all waitlists. Plus, what one of my friends said (and note, this did not come from an official of any kind!) was that when you are accepted to school X and waitlisted at school Y, if school Y pulls you off the waitlist they are obligated to notify school X before they even notify you. At which point school X would say, "Um, not quite, s/he deferred and was supposed to withdraw from your waitlist." Anyone know differently?

i don't know about the deferral stuff, but i'm pretty sure your friend was correct when they said the dean of school Y is obligated to notify school X before offering you a spot. i was in a situation this year where the dean from school Y asked if i was still interested because she had to notify school X before offering me an official acceptance... sorry for all the X's and Y's.

I recently was accepted off a waitlist and the admissions director said "I will now be obligated to contact school X to tell them that we are offering you a spot." To me it sounded like he hadn't done it yet. But, the call was pretty informal and I don't think they officially were going to offer me a spot and send me an acceptance package unless I said I wanted it.

I haven't been in this situation but I believe this is absolutely correct. If you go to the AMCAS website, read the document about "rights and responsibilities" of applicants and schools. It goes into detail about the (strongly) recommended procedures to be used for waitlists and such. Notifying school X for a waitlist acceptance is consistent with the recommended procedure.
