I am applying to schools like: Wayne State, Mass. Boston, Nova, South Carolina, West Virginia, Ferris State, etc

What do i need to score on the PCAT to get in those schools??

thanks

70-80 is usually thought of as "competitive", but Ice is right... just do your best.

If you're only capable of achieving a 75 on the PCAT, there's no sense in saying, "omg, I need a 90!"

make sense?

No one can tell you the minimum you need to get on the pcat to get accepted. And more things than just your gpa come into play here. With a fairly solid gpa like that I wouldn't say you need to worry about getting above 90. I think its generally assumed that anything above 80 is pretty good and anything above 70 is okay. But then again this is really subjective and is only one part of the application.

People have been accepted with scores in the 17th percentile. Many are accepted below 60. Your GPA is good so I say land anything above a 70 and you'll be on easy street.

For Wayne State their avg. overall pcat score was 80 for those that got accepted(in 2008). So I'd say aim for 80+. But I got in with a 65 overall... There's so many pieces to the getting into pharmacy school puzzle, that the pcat is one of many things that's looked at.

What is the rest of your app like? Pharmacy experience? Bachelor's degree? If so, in what?

I would think 75-80 should do it, but do the best you can! A 99 would sew it up for you, and if your app is weak otherwise you may need to crack 90.

17th percentile? Wow...that's news to me. 😱

There is no magic number. This year, I know we accepted several applicants with PCATs in the 50s. I also know that we waitlisted and/or rejected several 99 PCATs. If you score in the 70s-80s, you will be competitive. If you score in the 90s, you should be in very good shape. There are exceptions to every rule however, so keep a good GPA, get excellent LORs, and don't screw up your interview.

Dear Admissions,
For what reasons would your ad com waitlist or reject 99%tile pcats? red flags in other parts of the application?
Thank you for your posts,

Thank you for your posts,

Without going into great detail, the personal statement on one or more applicants really turned the committee off. He/she failed to answer the questions and didn't seem to have any real interest in pharmacy. I have seen LORs state in no uncertain terms that the applicant is difficult to work with, is not trustworthy or mature, or that they would simply not recommend them for pharmacy school. I have also seen 99 PCATs (or let's say 95+) who are viewed by the committee as acceptable only for them to have an awful interview and the committee does an about face and decides the applicant is not a good fit for the school.

A score above 80% composite should at least get you an interview. It's also the whole package such as: Recommendation Letters, pharmacy experience, volunteer work, and your personal statement. Good Luck and give it your best shot! 🙂

As you may know, many state funded schools (ie South Carolina, WV) have a preference for state residents. If you're out of state you will likely need a higher PCAT than you would normally need to get into those schools. Then again, if you blow them away in some other aspect like letters of rec or your essay then PCAT might be irrelevant. As someone else said, its the whole package and there is really no "X GPA + X PCAT = admission" formula.

This is a fair point to mention and I did address it on the blog a few weeks ago. Note to mod: if this is against SDN rules, please remove the link rather than kill the thread. I mention it because there is an inherent advantage to in state residents applying to their state public institutions: http://pharmacyschooladmissions.blogspot.com/search?q=state+school

The higher the better. Anything over 80 would give you a great chance of admission. While PCAT and gpa are important don't forget those extra-curriculars (research, volunteering, etc). They are often the factor that a school will use to differentiate between people with similar gpa/PCAT.
