Just wanted some med students advice on what to bring from home when moving for med school. Aside from a car, anything else you guys recommend bringing with you? Should I bring the family dog? haha She's a 11 year old golden who has been abusing me lately (getting me to carry her up the stairs) when I abused her when I was a child (I may have colored her with markers when I was younger...).

Seriously though. Anything you guys would recommend bringing? Thanks!

Do not bring the family dog to med school.

Just bring basic living stuff + some notebooks/flash cards/ etc. if that’s your thing + laptop + anything related to fun hobbies you could do to de-stress.

Also wouldn’t hurt to bring a spare will to live, if you have one, as it is not difficult to lose it somewhere throughout the years.

you are going to want at least one way to make good coffee.

noise blocking and/or noise-cancelling headphones:headphone:

uncrushed spirits, which will hopefully withstand some crushing

Clearly you have the coffee thing down.

I disagree about the blanket statement of not bringing the family dog (unless your family would hunt you down to get the dog back). I along, with many of my classmates, find that having a dog is the only way to properly de-stress from the insanity that is medical school.

Of course, if you think taking care of a dog would add more stress, then don't bring the dog. You can almost always find a nearby shelter and volunteer to be a dogwalker or even foster a pup or two if you find you have the time.

Crockpot. I still use my crockpot (even though I'm no longer in school). When I return home from work, it's nice to be welcomed by the delicious aroma of a home-made meal. My friends and family love it, too!

Electric blanket. If you live in a chilly weather state, it feels wonderful to warm up your bed linens before going to sleep - especially when you've been busy at school (or rotations/residency) all day long and your body and mind are aching or numb.

A high-quality fluffy bath towel. Just to wrap yourself in some blissful wonderfulness after you emerge from a steaming shower/tub.

Other items to keep in your new home-away-from-home:
1. A printed list of your emergency "people" contacts (including their telephone numbers, relationship to you, and email addresses) 'cuz your smart phone might be misplaced or stolen.
2. Copy of your important documents (e.g., driver's license, auto insurance policy cards, etc.). You may need a copy of these items if you lose them or your wallet is stolen.
3. Some emergency cash (you never know when actual cash will come in handy) - especially if you lose your credit cards/ATM card or your credit cards are stolen.

For LSU, I brought my Nintendo Switch with Mario Kart and Mario Party full downloaded into it, a minifridge full of multiple liter bottles of Coke and a Grey Goose, ping pong balls with plastic cups, 4 shot glasses, and portable chairs.

We had very fun post-test sessions, but avoid bringing these if you can't abstain from using them pre-test.

Someone's already said laptop, but I would also argue a nice indispensable luxury will be a 23 inch monitor you can hook up to in your apartment. It's so much easier on the eyes when you can study on the big screen as opposed to squinting at a 13-15inch laptop screen. Bonuses include being able to view ppt slides and your notes side by side on the large screen. Also netflix @1080p. Also gaming (yeah there's time for all that stuff).

Full disclosure: I brought my laptop and a full desktop computer. Best decision ever.

The family dog would probably be fine. M1-2 are typically easy times to take care of a dog (especially an old one). M3-4 you would probably need some help, but still very doable with a decent neighbor.

I left the TV behind. So far it has turned out to be a great decision, for me at least.

First off, love that you're a hearthstone fan too.
Second, my list would include:

Crockpot-Definitely makes meal prepping easier, epecially the weak of an exam. Plus...less dishes
Comfortable chair/desk-You are going to be spending a lot of time studing, invest in some good study furniture.
Noise cancelling headphones-If you have a roommate or choose to study in a library, helps keep distractions to a minimum.
Decent coffee maker-Self explanatory...
****Whatever matierals needed to maintain hobbies***-Med school is soul crushing, make sure to make time for yourself by doing something you enjoy a few times a week (gaming for me).

Don’t bring the dog. You won’t have time to properly take care of him/her.
Comfortable chair.
Loud alarm clock (I use one with a shaker component).
Reliable laptop. Ideally also have a large monitor you can plug into when at home.
Supply of fast meals. For example, some people choose instant noodles, some people choose canned food, and some people take a crockpot/instant pot. Whatever floats your boat, but you need them.
Paper, nice pen/pencil (don’t skim on these), highlighters.

A good chair. Embody, steel case leap.
A good set of headphones.
An instapot.
A large monitor , I use a 40 inch 4 k display.
A fast reliable laptop that has decent battery life.
A good pair of dress shoes.
Large whiteboard ( get a melamine sheet from home Depot to save some money)
A dependable car.
A fast large screen phone.
Lux , anki apps for laptop and phone.
A large desk.

Leave the dog, it's going to be stressful and you don't need to come home to potty acidents or mandatory return times.
