Hi, I graduated May 2006, then worked for my father's business for a year and a half to earn some money(non-medical related). Now, I have decided to go for optometry school. I have a 3.3 GPA with a 3.1 science GPA from SUNY Stony Brook in Health Sciences. Whats the minimum OAT score I must achieve in order for me to have a decent chance for admission into SUNY optometry?

One other question, where is the best place I can get experience for optometry? I have no relevant experience pertaining to optometry and wish to get some. I need help with this. Thanks😕

I go to STONY!!!
Im applying to optometry school this year too.
a bunch of places but not SUNY.

As far as OAT score...CONTACT SUNYO!!! that's the only place where you can receive real advise to your particular situation.

As for experience, contact a local optometrist and go from there.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Opted.org has info on the average OAT scores and GPA for incoming freshmen for each school, but contacting the school is usually a better source.

Aside from just looking good on your application, shadowing an optometrist is essential, IMO. You'll get a look firsthand look at what they do. Personally, I don't think I could have been sure I wanted to pursue this career until I shadowed a few optometrists. I asked to shadow my optometrist, and he also put me in touch with a couple others for variety. Good luck! 🙂

I agree wholeheartedly with the above comment re: dedication to optometry. You need to do some shadowing! Ask your own optometrist if you can, go with family members to their eye appointments, etc. How did you become interested in the field of optometry? (just wondering) The fact that I shadowed several at the optometry school here definitely sealed the deal for me. Good luck!
