Hi everyone! Since around October/November my family has been facing some really challenging and emotional times so between that and just making sure my GPA survives orgo and physics I've completely neglected my summer plans. I might be moving to California or staying/helping out with my grandmother, but hopefully I can stay near home in Chicago. Either way, I'm planning on taking the MCAT in September and I was wondering if it will look extremely weak to medical schools if I just take a psychobiology course at the nearest college and do some shadowing this summer? I really wish I could continue on at my research lab but due to finances and their inability to pay me for the summer it's really not feasible :/ If anyone knows of any grants/programs (with deadlines not passed- I know that's unlikely) or any other activities I can do this summer, I'm open to suggestions 🙂 Thanks everyone!

It will not look weak. As long as you have everything (shadowing, volunteering, etc) by the time you apply, you'll be fine. Just focus on the MCAT.

I guess this is just my opinion but I really don't think you should spend your summers worrying about looking good for medical schools...honestly just enjoy the time off. In a couple years we won't have summer vacations anymore, so we should enjoy them while we can. Do whatever sounds fun to you.

If you're lucky enough not to have to work full time while studying for the MCAT, enjoy it rather than complain and rub it in the faces who don't have that kind of luxury 😉

^ Sorry, I wasn't trying to rub it in anyone's face. I did work part time my freshman year (20 hrs/wk, I'm a sophomore now though) and even that was difficult so I can't imagine working full time.

Thanks everyone for the reassurance 🙂
