What is the general consensus on USC?

I have heard good things as well as bad things about the program. Most negative feed-back regards the PBL and the expense. The expense doesn't seem to be overwhelming when you look at the cost of any other private school. I have also heard that the instructors there in the past have been as intimidating as a highschool football coach. Does anyone else have any input?

at least they give every applicant the highest priority:laugh:

i just got a letter from them saying they'll review my app and that it'll be given the highest priority. later i found out on sdn that they have told the same thing to many others.

thanks for the priority!!!

I actually live in AZ so it would be nice to stay so close to home. I know a dentist who went to USC and he speaks very well of the program. He also said that 125 students started with him and 89 finished. Does anyone know the norm?

I have applied to AZ but I may not be what they are looking for.

I volunteered in a dental clinic here in phoenix, az, and one of the dentists went to USC. He hated it so much that I had no desire to apply there.

fort guy, you might be right. I actually heard about this thing. However, USC accepts 144 students every year.

I heard (not confirm with USC staff) that USC will give every D2 students a test before they actually take National board I. If you do not achieve a certain score of the exam, they won't let you take National Board in order to keep high passing rate. I don't know if it is true.

PBL sounds right to me and that is one of the reason I choose USC.

I will let you know if I can learn this information from SC staff.

my friend at usc told me the same thing 🙂

This may sound odd, but it is fairly common in medical school. Many medical schools implement a "shelf" exam. If students fail the shelf then they aren't allowed to take the USMLE. Not all medical schools do this of course but many do. It's a way for the school to protect it's reputation. Obviously, it makes a school look good if 100% pass the boards. So what many schools do is prevent students who are likely to fail the national boards by screening them through the use of shelf exam. I didn't know USC does this. Shelf exams suck. Often times, they are designed to be more difficult than the real thing. It becomes a nuisance and one more hurdle for students to deal with.
