I have heard bad things. However, I don't really know if my source was reliable. Anybody heard anything positive or negative about them?

Noyac trained there.

I have heard dichotomous things such as:

They work hard, it's really easy hours

Reputation is on low end.

I am very curious too and I have no first hand info.

Sleepytime, when r u interviewing?

Well I guess i gotta comment on this one, too. It has been 3 1/2 yrs since I finished residency and I can say that I was well prepared when I finished. UNM was a very busy place with a lot of trauma most of all. You will come out of there ready to do any trauma that comes your way. With that being said, the heart program has slowed down, do to a contract problem with cardiologists at the hosp. If you are interested in research like I was, you will be disappointed. The research dept. that I was involved with has been scrapped. Regional is good and there is a new ambulatory center for a better real world type of experience. The hours are fine. Come in a 2pm on-call and leave 7am. Off the next day. Not too many weekends that I can recall. There was oportunity for internal moonlighting within the anesth dept. Not a tremendous amount of money but at least you are moonlighting in your field. The pain program was good for residnets but I would go somewhere else for fellowship. the peds program had everything even hearts when I was there and no fellows. Overall, it was great for me but it has changed some since I left and I can't totally comment on it at this time. Also, they had mock oral exams which were a great tool for the boards. Hope that helps some. If you have more questions let me know. Good Luck.

Oh, and if you like mtnbiking, Alb. rocks.

When I interviewed there last year it seemed like a sound program. Like Noyac said they touted peds as one of their strong points and hearts as one of their weak points. Also, they reported getting to do large numbers of blocks during their months of regional and felt that this was rapidly becoming a strong point.

Internal moonlighting was an option there. I'm pretty sure they told us on the tour that they take turns working on the weekends, which is their moonlighting, for 50 or 60$/hr or something.

I can't comment much on their reputation but I think its a program you choose for the location if you want to live in Albuquerque and like a lot of outdoors activities. The residents all seemed very laid back and into outdoors activities of some sort.

Feel free to PM me with any other specific questions you may have.

True, if you like the outdoors you will like Albuquerque. If not then, well, you still might like it there. I found lots of time for my hobbies while I was a resident. Except for the intern year. that was busy as HELL but very good.
