What do you bring for interviews?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My style and my swag is all I need.

No but really......umm. I bring a pen if I can remember, but thats pretty much it. They usually will give you one and/or somethign to write on. Some people bring breifcases and bags of that sort, but I'd rather not carry that around and i have no idea what the hell i would need it for.

Agree with Ryser. Try to remember a pen. At my VCOM interview we got everything so no outside materials were needed. At PCOM I took my roommate's leather legal pad holder and all it was good for was holding a few items and adding an extra thing for me not to forget at the school.

An apple? Lol no. Nothing needed...they aren't expecting anything. I would bring a padfolio to keep all your papers in though.

nothing but a pen if I remember, which I usually don't and it hasn't mattered.

I bring a portfolio. I don't like to have my hands empty in certain social situations.

What would go in said portfolio? A copy of the application, maybe a resume? What else?

Bring whatever you want, but you won't be able to use it on the actual interview. They'd rather hear it come out of your mouth.

I took a zipper portfolio. I put one sheet of paper in it an a pen. It was more for holding my car keys and breath mints than anything else.

No interview can be complete without an inflatable woman 😱.

Hard copies of research publications, master's thesis, etc. in a portfolio. They love seeing the diagrams/charts/pictures but you should also be able to draw everything out yourself if asked to (my mistake last year 🙁) For all else, I agree with another poster who mentioned they prefer hearing everything out of your mouth than read from a paper in your binder... last year I was actually asked to put my resume away when the interviewer asked me about dates pertaining to specific research conferences I had attended (have everything on your primaries memorized). Not sure if that was helpful at all, but good luck anyway.

I think it should go unsaid that you should bring your resume and primary in your head. I'd think whipping it out at the interview and reading off of it would be a bit embarassing.

Yeah it was actually pretty funny if you think about it, and then at another one I couldn't even draw the pathway of a system I'd studied for 4 years... completely blanked... also, didn't really prepare for either interview because I didn't really feel like I belonged there in the first place... and surprise, surprise of course I didn't get in.

I seriously should have just waited and applied later with a stronger app.

How about for the ladies? I was planning on just bringing a big tote (I hate carrying multiple things in my hands, and like to shove it all in one purse), but I'm afraid that maybe a large purse is a bit too feminine for an interview? 😕

You're thinking about it too much. Bring whatever you need to bring. You'll be leaving any purses/bags/briefcases/luggage outside of the interview room, in most cases. Your stuff will have a home in a conference room or the admissions office for most of the day. Even if you have to bring all of your stuff into the interview room with you, nobody cares if you have a hobo bag vs. a large tote vs. a duffle vs. a whatever. You'll just set it on the ground as soon as you walk in, anyway. 🙂 👍

I love your new avatar! Is that you being so excited over all your acceptances and invites?

lol, judging by the suitcase he's holding, i'm assuming it's partly in celebration of his new mod-ship. 😀

I've got one a week this month. What do you bring? Something to take notes with? Comfort Blanky? Cash bribes?

Pack light and only bring the bare essentials with you to the interview. Having a briefcase seems weird and you'll just have to hang on to it all day. Considering you'll most likely take a tour of the school you'll be that guy who has too much stuff.

I never brought anything other then my purse... they always give you stuff at the interview..

I carry a large purse. I like to have water, a snack, something to read in case of a long wait, a pad of paper, a pen, etc....I like to be prepared. 🙄

BTW, what's wrong with being feminine?

Nothing, except in business scenarios it does hurt your chances. I don't know about med interviews.

I usually don't bring anything. So far, every interview has included snacks and drinks and just about everything I need. Sometimes a pen would've been nice, but they always gave a folder full of crap.

Don't bring anything. You'll get all the stuff you need there, from food and drink to admissions paperwork and a folder to put it in. They will give you a pen if you wanna jot down some notes. Do bring a big smile tho...😀

When I read this, I was thinking that first, if it's a purse, you will have it with you all day (um, I'm not willing to leave my wallet/cellphone/keys in a random room, sorry) so make sure it's not too heavy to carry. That, and while people may not care if it's a hobo versus a tote or whatever, if it's downright ugly or completely inappropriate for a business setting, people will notice. I cannot tell you how many awful bags I saw last year!

I had a large purse with me so that I could carry extra hose, hairbrush, makeup, flats, and my portfolio alongside my wallet and keys. The only people who noticed were other girls who said they liked my bag. Women carry purses, I think it's pretty much expected that you will have one. I think a large bag looks a bit more professional that carrying some dainty clutch, anyways.

It took me about 4 interviews before i decided to purchase a professional black leather portfolio binder. I kept seeing a lot of the other applicants with these and I broke down and got one. I don't think it was a necessary purchase, but it's nice to have a place to put business cards and inventory ideas and items throughout the day. Not to mention, it allows the opportunity to bring your primary and secondary application with you for last minute file review.
