I know this may sound like a stupid question but I was just wondering what do you carry in your scrub and lab coat pockets ?

My pockets have gotten a lot lighter over the years. Most of my pocket references have retired to my locker (where i can get them if i really need them, but most of the time i depend on my residents to look that stuff up for me).

Scrubs - back pocket - empty. front pocket - pen.
Lab coat - R. pocket - patient list/todo lists, small change purse. L pocket - stethoscope (with pen light attached). Breast pocket- pen, lipstick.

That's it!

Back scrub bottom pocket is my wallet and patient list.

Front scrub top pocket (outside) is a pen and a few index cards.

Front scrub top pocket (inside) is my phone.

Lab coat pocket (right) is a scrub cap and on the other side are some alcohol wipes.

I love these semi-annual "what do we keep in our pockets" threads.

Left outer coat pocket: stethoscope and roll of silk tape
Left inner coat pocket: trauma shears, Rx pad, zip top baggy with surgilube and bacitracin packets, some cotton swabs and a needle driver
Right inner coat pocket: extra pen, penlight, marking pen, procedure log, old electrolyte replacement cheat sheet, sometimes some gum or chapstick
Right outer coat pocket: photocopied H&Ps from charts I still have to dictate, blank order sheets, today's OR schedule, tomorrow's OR schedule, patient lists, The Absite Review, Blackberry with ePocrates, keys, service pager and personal pager
Breast pocket: black pen, red pen, frequently called numbers cheat sheet, The Surgery Intern Pocket Survival Guide, Maxwell's

I think my coat weighs about 30 lbs. There's not really anything I feel comfortable taking out though. 😳

Dispair and Plague.

Otherwise known as my Pager and probably MRSA. Probably should wash the thing.

scrub pants pockets--nothing, unless I've ditched my white coat, then stethoscope.

inside scrub top pocket--wallet

outside scrub pocket--cell phone, pen, stickers for cases i've scrubbed that day (though I log them immediately). Also my patient lists.

white coat breast pocket--maxwells, phone/pager list, two pens, a skin marker, and two packages of surgi-cel

white coat left outer pocket--stethoscope
white coat right outer pocket--surgi-lube, sometimes car keys (if i plan on going out to my car), and a scrub cap.

PGY-3 ENT

L breast pocket- pens, penlight, script pad

Used to be much more as a med student and intern.

As a med student on surgery I carried

right outside coat pocket: stethoscope
right inside coat pocket: wallet, suture removal kit, staple remover kit
left outside coat pocket: bandages, gauze pads, tape, nonsterile gloves in my resident's size
left inside coat pocket: PDA with surgical recall, Wash. Manual
breast pocket: Maxwell's, pen, gum, patient list (folded in quarters)
scrub pocket: phone

pager goes on waist

surgilube went in the back pocket of scrub bottoms

Soooo true! My white coat is a virtual petri dish no matter how often I clean it.

Gen Surg PGY3

WOW. I think my spine would snap in half!

Back scrubs pocket - wallet

White coat breast pocket - a couple of pens, ID badge

Left White coat pocket - whatever handbook I'm reading currently, patient list & OR schedule, a sterile 11 blade w/ handle, ACLS cards, chapstick

Right White coat pocket - stethoscope, trauma shears, 2" paper tape, spare scalpel blades (impossible to find in the hospital when you need to do a bedside debridement), hair clip, kelly clamp

Back pocket of scrub pants = patient list
Front pocket of scrub top = Tarascon Pharmacoepia, couple pens, ACLS cards, #11 blade, credit card, a few bills

ID badge clipped to scrub top.

Scrub top outer pocket: wallet
Scrub top inner pocket: PDA
Scrub pants back pocket: prescription pad, handheld doppler
Lab coat L pocket: stethoscope, femoral a-line kit, guaiac cards and developer, lube
Lab coat R pocket: patient list, Greenfield
Lab coat breast pocket: thoracotomy tray

Right coat pocket: Maxwell's, the good drug rep pens, photocopies of today's notes, the stethoscope and chapstick
Left white coat pocket: Mass Gen pocket medicine, the lesser drug pens, current pt list/to do list, older notes, dayquil.
Chest pocket: the best drug rep pens, name badge

The wallet, key's and cellphone/PDA cycle their ways though the 2 inside coat pockets and the pants pockets.

When I was on surgery:

Left coat pocket ("work pocket"): trauma shears, transpore tape, package of gauze, index cards, patient list, surgilube, hemoccult developer, alcohol wipes.

Right coat pocket: stethoscope, pager (since nobody ever paged me anyhow!), 3-0 ties to practice with.

Left inner coat pocket: granola bars, sometimes cell phone.

Right inner coat pocket: small bottle of lotion, chapstick.

Coat breast pocket: Maxwells, pens, penlight (very useful for ENT - checking people's mouths in the early AM).

Scrubs breast pocket: money, sometimes cell phone.

Scrubs back pocket: OR schedule, sometimes a stray glove or two.

I used to carry a PDA in my left inner coat pocket, until I got fed up with that hefty thing and left it at home.

Reading this thread is truly entertaining - comparing the attendings to the residents to the students....

I gotta say... I'm really encouraged that so many of you still carry your stethoscopes and managed not to lose it this far in the game. Mine walked away during my R2 year. Never replaced it. If I need one I use a disposable or borrow the intern/medical student's.

hey they are hard to find when you really need one! 😀 i was kidding - i don't really carry around greenfield with me either.

I don't wear a coat, I throw my stethoscope over my shoulder or around my neck and ditch it in the call room ASAP in the mornings.
