Hey guys.. I haven't really thought about eating during dental school until now. During undergrad, I started eating unhealthy and gained a few pounds. Especially with things like pop tarts and other fast, on the go types of food. Lately I have been cooking and eating healthier and want to maintain this lifestyle but it can be time consuming. So do you guys cook often? Bring lunch to school? Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks guys!😀

Cook large amounts once or twice a week and take it to school

👍 healthier and saves money. my favorites are turkey meatloaf and spaghetti w/ turkey meatballs. pack w/ yogurt, rice cakes, banana and you're good to go.

jb!🙂

i'm not in dschools, but i know a thing or two about living in my office at the school. i LOVE alfredo pasta, so usually every couple of weeksor so, i'll go buy a 2-4 lb bag of bone/skinless chicken, a box of whole grain pasta, a jar of alfredo sauce and a 2 lb bag of frozen shrimp.

cook the whole box of pasta, grill all the chicken (season if you wish), and just throw in as much shrimp as you want. all that with the sauce, you now have a 5-6 solid meals for the week at a fraction of the price you pay at a nice restaraunt. and if you want, just steam some broccoli and throw that in there two, or eat it on the side.

i also make a lot of sandwhiches with bagels instead of normal bread. you get a few more extra calories (good ones) to get you through the day and i feel like they fill me up better and for longer periods of time.

PM me if you want some more ideas. i'm not a nutrition expert, but i was a personal trainer for a couple years and am ACSM (american college of sports medicine) and ACE (american council on exercise) certified 😀

it varies for me...i cook and eat healthy at times, but then i get lazy or too busy to cook and resort to old unhealthy habits of ordering takeout/fastfood/pizzas

i'm gonna get so fat come dental school. especially with exams, i eat the worst stuff hahaha game over.

thanks for your help guys 👍

Get a spouse... mine cooks dinner and packs a lunch for me 🙂 I love him! I usually cook breakfast on weekends and pitch in with dishes whenever possible.

Also, for healthy eating - Go Organic and drink Raw Milk. Type in Why eat Organic in Google or Yahoo - you can look for research articles too and also visit organicpastures.com for excellent information on Raw milk.

"Get a spouse... mine cooks dinner and packs a lunch for me " - Hang on to him and you need to clone him. I still do all the cleaning, cooking, laundry, and pay the bills. But in my husbands defense he works about 65-85 hours a week so that I do not have to work while I am in school. But he did promise me a housekeeper if I get into D-school.🙂

Me and most of my classmates bring a Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice meal for lunch every day (there are microwaves in the lunchroom). They are only 300+ calories and a lot cheaper than buying lunch every day. Plus, you just throw them in a lunch bag with some of those ice-packs and you're ready to go in less than 90 seconds on your way out the door at the crack of dawn.

TONS of sodium tho. at least the one's i've seen. might not be a good idea for EVERY day. can't beat that convenience tho! and still better than fast food by far.

i'm with sunflower. get a good spouse!! my wife cooks awesome food & she's great about making lunches for me. even while having a kid.

Wow...just went to the fridge...680mg of sodium for one serving? Holy smokes! Still beats Del Taco, though.

I have been a vegeterian on weekdays, meat eater on weekend since dental school. Eating lots of vegies & tofu, drink only organic milk, eat organic cheese. I make my own yogurt. Avoid carb pack food like bagel because it's easy to get cavities that way. Also, avoid all of those free lunches on campus. It's usually pizza, burritos, all those things that build up fat in your coronary arteries.
After I finished d-school, I actually shed a few pounds compare to when I started. Then I shed even more once I started working. So, don't worry if you gain a few grams in d-school. Enjoy the ride.

Learn how to make casseroles. Make them on the weekends and eat the leftovers for a few days. I like to make a large family size so I have lots leftover. My mother was nice and made me two frozen lasagnas this weekend that i took back to school with me. yum😀

I used to cook in the weekend...and that usually got me going for a week. during the week, i dn't think you have time to cook 🙂

I thought I was going to get fat once d-school started, but i eat maybe 1400-1500 calories a day on average (I'm a 6'4" male) and sleep about 4-6 hours a night. I lost about 10 lbs my first few months in school. I considered exercising, but it would just make me more hungry and loan money is tight, so I've gone into hibernation mode. Before a test I eat left over halloween candy to get my brain some glucose, and on the weekends if I go visit family I stuff myself, go to sleep, wake up and repeat the process until late Sunday night.
Basically, I don't have much food, don't have much time to make it anyways and spend too many hours not sleeping. Sometimes if I'm desperate I go to Pizza Hut for the lunch buffet and eat 10-12 slices and that usually gets me through 2 or 3 days without having to eat much. I'm like a boa constrictor or something. It's gross.

That sounds really disgusting 👍

The thing you need to watch out for is once you hit private practice, if you have an office with anything resembling a moderate number of employees (5 or more) and an eating area/break area in the building. The amount of junk food that rapidly accumulates in that area is staggering😱 The temptation then periodically to walk by and grab a handfull of pretzels/crackers/chips/whatever baked good someone brought in that day is great.

This time of year with the holidays approaching, the ever present specialist "thank you" food gift baskets start showing up and bringing even more vast quantities of really good tasting, but nutrionally non existant food into the office. What we typically end up doing in my office is come the 1st week of January most of the 10 of us that work here tend to go on a group diet to shed those couple of pounds that we all tend to put on this time of year, and atleast for a few weeks, the shelves in the kitchen area of my office are void of junk food (that all changes again about Valentines Day😉)

I eat about 7 servings of vegtables a day
2-4 8oz glasses of skim milk
5-6 4oz servings of grains
80z of meat(fatty fish 2 times a weak)
and don't drink :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
