I am currently in my first year of Dental School at UAB. I know that I want to be an OMFS after I graduate. I was wondering which kind of program I should look into a 4/6 yr. Before I applied to dental school I spent sometime working in my hometown at a kindergarten as a PE teacher. I really like working with children plus I like the idea of becoming a surgeon. With that said my goal of becoming an OMFS is centered around working with children that were born with cleft deformities. I also would like to get into a little bit of trauma call as well.
So I was wondering which program do I need to look into? Do I need the 6 yr MD degree to perform this type of surgical proceedure or will a 4 yr program be sufficient. I know UAB has an excellent program but its 6 yrs and I was just wondering if a 4 yr program will work. I woudnt mind going a shorter route if it gets me to the point I would like go.
A second question what schools do I need to look at that centers their training more towards Crainofacial surgeries?
Thats for your comments and advice!
