One of my friends is applying to school with the following stats? Do you guys think he has a chance!!

GPA 3.16
GPA Sci 2.97
He has extensive Research experience
Tons of shadow experience
Extra curriculum and Undergraduate mentorship programs at ucsf!!
Strong letters of rec

I was talking to him and I thought he has a good chance of getting in. What do you think?

edit:unless he is black, hispanic, or native american, in which case the odds are much better.

GPA/DAT are the meat n potatoes of an application. research, LOR, ECs are definitely pluses, but i dont see how that can make up for a sub-3.0 sciGPA and a 13 QR

Definitly needs to retake the DAT.

Retake the DAT and needs 22+ I would say..... and apply to a ton of schools... if not chances are slim

if you are a dental student already, in the US i presume, don't you have a pretty good idea on admissions stats?

Agreed, you don't have a shot at it unless your improve your DAT/GPA a LOT!

If it is, no you dont have a shot, if it isnt, no he/she doesnt have a chance. Unless they plan on building a new school at the place they want to attend.

I thought about that too, but his other posts say he's going to Temple. They also say he's from California and if that's true then his friend has even less of a chance with such strong state schools.

Race does matter if you are an underrepresented minority, but Vietnamese are not (to my knowledge only Africans, Hispanics/Latinos and Native Americans/Alaska Natives are considered URMs by those schools which choose to engage in affirmative action). Caucasians are actually underrepresented in D-school as a percentage of the population (only Asians are over represented) but I'm pretty sure there's no affirmative action trying to fix that

Seriously though, you need to retake the DAT. Even as a minority, your chances would be tough since even minority schools nowadays are getting tougher to get into.

i think the 13 in QR won't meet some school's reqs. So as others have said, retake retake retake.

I think AA is the most bull **** thing ever invented. But I won't go into all that in here and ruin your thread.
