So, I am a Pharmacist that has a strong desire to go to dental school. I wanted to see if you all had any idea on my chances before I invest this next year preparing for the DAT's. The following are some facts about my credentials.

Pharmacist since 2006. Working retail part-time and clinical setting full time.

Graduated w only a 2.9 GPA from pharmacy school

Pre-reqs (math and sciences) GPA 3.4 but were taken at a community college

Volunteer as a pharmacist with local community elderly care center

I think I need to do amazing on the PAT's and maybe even take a few science classes at a local university. What do you guys think?? Do I have a shot? Id be willing to go to any dental school although I prefer to stay in or near NJ.

Oh, and the reason why I want to change careers is that I always wanted to be a Dentist. I took my prereq classes at a community college and dental schools weren't for it. So I decided to go to Pharmacy school (my backup).

Thanks all, in advance.

Roll the dice. Dentistry rocks.

But be aware that your P-school GPA may or may not be calculated into your overall GPA. Rock the DAT, take more science (if you need to), and get some exposure to dentistry so that ADCOMS know that you're serious about the career.

Best of luck!

Thanks for your advice. I guess I have to try at least! I can honestly say that Pharmacy doesn't rock!

You do NOT need to rock the PAT... matter of fact, anything above 19 is fine.

Now the DAT, thats a different story lol (duh right)... the higher the better.

The most challenging thing about your application will be (and to be honest, its not much of a challenge) is explaining yourself in the personal statement about the career change.

I dunno how professional schools view GPAs from other professional schools, but a 2.9 from pharmacy is not the same as a 2.9 from undergrad lol.... Call your school of interest, ask to speaking to an admission counselor (see if they'll met you up in person), write up all your numbers and GPAs and whatever and go show them... see what advice they give you to make yourself more competitive.

I have to say I really love this forum. Eveyones been helpful and most importantly, honest. I don't want anyone to sugarcoat. Hey, If I have a chance then great, if not then thats fine too. I wanted to see if there was a school that would be more accommodating to my situation. Like I said before, Id prefer to stay near central NJ but at this point, Id go anywhere just to get in.

I will start studying for the DAT's soon. Was thinking of taking some refresher Bio and Chem courses at a local community college at night first and then start on the DATs. I haven't taken General Chem or Bio in about 9 years!!
