What do you want to be?

I want to either be an OB/GYN or a neurosurgeon. I love the surgery aspect to both, although I hate spinal surgery, the bones freak me out! So, yeah, I would exclusively operate on brains.

I want to be an emergency medical physician, a so-called jack of all trades. I really like how they are quite broadly trained but still able to handle specific situations in emergencies.

I have no idea yet haha...I just know that I want to do something in the health care field. I'm sure I'll change my mind a million times. But hey, that's what college is for. 🙂

I wana be a physical therapist with a personal training side job. What about you op? And ^is your name a reference to a song? Perhaps by David banner?

Nah it's sort of referencing a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I also thought it sounded cool lol.

Many neurosurgeons tend to work mostly on spinal cases. Keep in mind that neurosurg focuses on the entire nervous system. Spine is kind of a major part o that!

I really want to be an Ob/Gyn. I can't imagine myself doing anything else

If you want to be a neurosurgeon you will have to work on the spine. Period. During your 7 years of residency (after medical school) you will be required to do spinal cases.

P.S.

Trauma Surgery or Emergency Medicine for me.

I'm leaning more towards finance and business maybe getting a MD/MBA and not doing a residency

Who knows. But I'm definitely leaning more towards Finance, investing and business

You should do that. You could go into the medical insurance management or something. Or the medical technology business.

I feel like being a healthcare executive would be better for me, maybe being a CFO and moving my way up.

And if anyone was wondering what medical specialty I would pick, it would be Otolaryngology/Internal Medicine

Internal Medicine is great for people who like to think. Otolaryngology would be my choice because I like using my hands and thinking. I consider myself a doer that likes to think. =

Which is why I like podiatry so much

I don't have an inferiority complex. So I don't care about the stigma.

Not sure really. Hoping someone can give me some advice.
I want to deal with patients and do research as well. Perhaps in computational biology creating mathematical models. MD/Phd maybe?

Yes, Physician Scientist, they do both lab research and clinical work.

If your goal is to do research you might want to do MD/PhD. It will be highly beneficial for getting research grants, and more importantly; jobs. There is research going on in every field of medicine, so choose what interests you the most. What about an Internal Medicine subspecialty like endocrinology?

Thanks for the info! 🙂
I might look into infectious diseases.

Career wise, what do you want to be?

I'm pretty certain I'll enter a surgical field assuming the match goes well for me in 5-6 years. After that I'll probably try to sub-specialize within surgery as I'm not all that interested in General Surgery. I'm thinking Vascular, Ortho, Cardiothoracic, or Neuro right now. I'm not completely ruling out General Surgery or any specialty for that matter because I haven't been through rotations or experienced any of these fields beyond shadowing. I could end up in something completely different, but right now I'm heavily swayed towards surgery.

EDIT: It's likely I'll end up in General Surgery after the horror stories I read on this forum about the hell GS interns and residents go through. Not sure I'll want to specialize any further if residency is really terrible. haha

My cousin did general surgery, after the first year she switched to Emergency Medicine.

I would like to be a Diagnostic Radiologist. I want to finish an undergrad in Honors.Bio/Physics and then hopefully get into Medical School and go from there.

Thinking cardiothoracic surgeon or derm atm

:owle: what ever do you mean?

Have fun getting a 54 on your MCAT and 309 on all your USLME tests in order to place in a residency. 🙄

But for me? I'm thinking a little less conventional. I'd like to hold a part time gig as a ER doc somewhere, but be more involved as a medical director for a large ambulance service. That way I can have the physician's salary but be able to play paramedic. It's a win win situation 🙂
