Hi everyone, I'm a Canadian student, and I've posted a couple new threads here on SDN about Canadian issues wrt osteopathic schools. I have a new issue now! 🙂
I got my grade 13 (Ontario Academic Courses) evaluated by WES at the advice of AACOMAS, in order to determine if my grade 13 Physics and English courses are equivalent to first-year university (I did not take Physics and English in undergrad). I received the completed evaluation today, and it stated that "Advanced placement may be considered for the university preparatory subjects (Ontario Academic Courses)."
US-equivalent letter grades were provided for these courses, but the value given for US semester credits was "0.0". So, what does this mean? Do I have to retake the courses or not? This is so frustrating! I was hoping to have a final answer by now, so I can take these courses in the summer term (which starts next week). I also had a copy of this evaluation sent to AACOMAS, so I may have to end up asking them, but I just wanted to see if any other students have been in this situation. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Just wanna start by saying HELLO my fellow Canuck, even thoe Im here in Edmonton we still face the same issues. Just wanted to ask why DO schools in the states?. Is it becuase the MD schools in Canada were too hard to get in? (trust me I know) or 2. U wanted to become a DO all along.?. Im asking this cause the finacial strain of going south of the border is almost 10 fold and its in US dollers too

Hi fellow Canuck! Yes, the reason I am considering DO is because I did not get in to the med schools that I applied to here in Ontario. And also, the more I read about osteopathy, the more I like it. I realize the great financial burden, but after working so hard, I'm not going to let money stop me! (If I can!)

Well let me give you some advice, If you had your heart set on a M.D then going down to the states to get a D.O will not solve the issue. But if you truly find the osteopathic method more interesting then go and follow your dreams. But what I wanted to know is why just apply to Schools in Ontario you could have applied to many other fine schools in western canada such as Manitoba, Sask...... and they are easier then U of T.?

There have been previous posts about Canadians and Osteopathich Medical School in the US. I am one of those who applied and got accepted to UNECOM. If you do a search Canada or Canadian and Osteopathy on SDN you should be able to get those previous posts.

BTW. I am not sure if Grade 13 counts. I thought it did not. But you will have to ask AACOMAS if 0.0 credit counts. I actually thought you need to have 8.0 credit in each subject. The schools are actually the one that sets these requirements and not AACOMAS. So maybe it is better to contact them as well. I know AAMC doesn't accept OAC cources.

So I would be prepared to do these courses.

Why do D.O. in the US? There are many reasons for doing this. For some, it could be because one could not get into Canadian medical schools.

DO is another mean of becoming a physician. But one should research the prof and the schools with great details. There are some positives and some negatives. You should also get in touch with some Canadian DOs. There are about 10-15.

There are a few of us here on the boards and I am sure we can answer your questions, or at least help you get an answer.

Please remove the comments about americans and anything that can be understood as negative. If you want to say these things. GO TO another chat board. NOT AN AMERICAN ONE.

Well said. I wanted to know if you were eligible to recieve financial aid from your school, And will the Canadian government give any money out to people studying in the states even if they plan to come back and practice.? :meanie:

Financial aid.. hmmmm that is always a problem.

There is CanHelp ( I believe is part of citibank-US)http://www.internationalstudentloan.com/canhelp/

Also there are canadian banks. I believe Bank of Montreal and Royal bank will give you a line of credit for up to 150k$Can, which is okay but not the best since you pay interest on the money right away.

Canada student loan is pennies. ~7,000$ Canadian only. Not much at all. However you should check with each province. I know BC and ON are not going to give you much.

Best would be if your parents can take out a morgage /financing. I don't have that option.

I defered for one year to finish my graduate degree so I have not started yet.. but the money is always on my mind. It is lots and lots of money.

Docbill, I am having so much trouble finding a US trained DO here in the greater Toronto Area. The canadian college of osteopathy was no help, and i've been awating a response from the ontario association of osteopathy for almost 2 weeks. I remember you giving me a couple of names earlier about people to contact - do you mind giving me those names again? thanks so much!

I just copy pasted this from the American Osteopathic Association website. All the way on the bottom.

President is Dr.Ted Findlay. He can provide you with Contact info for working DOs across the country. I have met with him and he is very supportive.

I don't believe there is a DO in GTA. There is one just outside Toronto. He is the president of the Ontario Osteopathic Association. I believe there is a DO in London, ON.

canadian college of osteopathy doesn't really get involved with US DOs and have I don't think they would be supportive since they are a seperate entity and prob not happy to have US DO taking over.

Thank you so much docbill for the info, I really appreciate it!
