What dog are you getting?

I convinced my wife to agree to letting me get a German Shepherd puppy as soon as we get our first house (not sure when that will be).

I told her it was the best kind of security system we could get.

We have a two year old 5lb Shih Tzu right now and she is cute.... but not really a great guard dog.

shepherds = amazing

grew up with them all my life

I hope to adopt another one when I get to "insert med school name here."

We have a 1/2 Dalmation and 1/2 English Setter right now. She a very good dog. I really want a New Foundland one day if I have another dog.

Someday I'd like to get an Australian Cattle Dog. I don't know for sure if I'll be up for it in med school, but if I get one, I will for sure adopt from a shelter.

Only the best kind of security if they are trained to be usually. 😉 I have a doberman but he is afraid of everything...and I mean everything. I considered getting a dog, but they are so much money. Especially since you are supposed to keep about 500-1000 dollars in the bank for any health surprises.

If I'm in a cheaper area I'll adopt one from the humane society or something.

I love vizla's they have some of the good traits of weimys with out bad. I've had a weimy but never a visla, however if I was to get another dog I that is the breed I would go for

All dogs are great really, you can't go wrong with any dog over 40 #lbs......now the little barking rats that people claim are dogs...they are another story

Love Weimaraners. I have a German short haired pointer right now (err well hes at home), but I've been dying to get a dog for a while now. I'm thinking Siberian Husky.

When I got accepted I promised my wife I'd get her a dog to get over the many nights I'm not going to be home. She chose a shih tzu. We both love him!

A client of mine has a Vizsla, and that thing is badass. I sometimes dogsit for her and her husband when they go out of town. The dog is incredibly smart. They did a great job of training it, and its sole desire in life is to please its humans.

I've heard Vizsla's are good running companion dogs since they need a lot of exercise

My friend had one and he would pace us - if he got too far ahead he would start turning his head around like "lets move it ladies!" 🙂

English Setters rock! That's what my Cassidy is! No more for now though.

Yeah, she is so calm and good with kids and smart. She's a good guard dog but very friendly to strangers too. I think this is mostly the English Setter in her since I think Dalmations are supposed to be a little more gruff than she is.

I'd love to get a Swissy puppy to keep my 5yo Swissy entertained, not that it would be a good idea... These puppies have to be cute because they take up to 18 months to housetrain...

I like pit bulls for a few reasons:

1) I feel bad for them. So many are abused, and it pisses me off. I have a soft spot for doggies.

2) They are super-athletic and energetic. Will keep me running throughout med school.

3) They are awesome.

Unfortunately, aside from looking tough, they aren't typically good guard dogs. Unless the intruders you are trying to guard against are other dogs. Then they will be awesome.

agree with all of the above, pits are such great, sweet loving dogs and they are so stereotyped. Sure if you take the dog and raise it to be a killer, then those natural instincts will come out, but you can raise a golden retriever to be a killer as well (actually I have worked with alot of dogs and golden retrievers tend to be the most aggressive towards other dogs especially, a warning to anyone that gets a golden, they are not 'dog dog's they are people dogs, they tend to not enjoy other dogs especially if they precieve they are competing for a owners attention)

Back to pits though, if you don't train them to be mean dogs they are actually the most docile, sweet dogs around and can be quite scaredy cats (that fear is what people use to make them so vicious)

Pibbles are not naturally aggressive towards humans. They can hurt people, however, who are trying to break up fights between the pibble and another dog.

Also, they can hurt you when they're just playing around. They are ridiculously strong, and very playful and active. You just have to be careful and not do stupid crap, because they can hurt you accidentally.

I am not too worried about this.

Right now I have a basset hound, he just had his 15 1/2 birthday! Bassets are so sweet and loyal (and drooly), but they're not the smartest dogs ever 😛

My boyfriend and I want to get a dog next year, but I think it'll have to be smaller to accommodate my apartment-living during med school (as opposed to a house with land to run around that my dog enjoys now).....maybe a corgi?? It's like a basset, miniaturized!

When I was deciding on what kind of dog to get I was so set on a Vizsla. They are so beautiful, but I was told they need soooooo much exercise, the kind only a big backyard can provide. I would definitely be prepared to tend to the energy requirements of any dog. I ended up getting a Rhodesian Ridgeback, which is definitely a lot bigger than the Vizsla. Ridgebacks are relatively inactive indoors (my guy is downright lazy), but once they get outside they want to move. My dog is the best jogging buddy ever, mostly due to the fact that he trots while I jog so he could go forever. He is also a fearsome watchdog. The breed is naturally wary around strangers, which is the only thing I would like to tone down. However, he probably wouldn't be as good of a watchdog.

Corgis are a$sholes.

Hm. Well what other small-ish non-toy would I get? A cocker spaniel? They seem too hyper...

A purebred corgi is beautiful up front and awful down behind. Look at how much fur is in the way of, you know. Plus their herding instinct can be a lot to deal with. But I've had and known corgi mixes that are like talkshow hosts - really fun. Can't beat that face for a smile.

Seriously, mutts can be great dogs, and so far I've yet to see as much personality in a purebred. Go down to the shelter, meet some dogs, spend the afternoon with one you like, and go home with a personality. My best dog ever was part corgi, part golden, part yellow lab, and almost undoubtedly part pibble. Big 'ol jaw on him. Big 'ol heart too.

This is my golden retriever that I will take with me wherever I go. His name is Parker....he's a very curious thing and doesn't know that he's a dog. He thinks he's human. 😀 I like to be around him more than being around people. Ha!

He's jumping up at the camera in this picture. That's why it's so goofy.

cocker spaniels are too much work. Jack russels are good little dogs (though can be hyper) and there is a mini breed called a rat terrier, but they are a little bit yappy. I have actually never been a fan of small dogs, the dog tex showed you is legit, but other suggestions would be a boston terrier (my buddy had one and it was great and little ) and a mini dobermann pinscher (personal favorite based on looks alone).

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of small dogs in general, but I would just feel so bad leaving a big dog in an apartment all day while I'm in class, you know?

(<<<<<<<<< look over there)

I'm taking the greyhound just to your left, and her sister. Greyhounds will be great for medical school because they sleep about 23 hrs a day. I don't have to feel guilty about not giving them enough attention or exercise. They are more or less like giant cats.

We would like to get a dog eventually but not soon. It would have to be whatever breed my husband and son are the least allergic to.

I want to get a pair of Huskies when I have a house and yard for them to play in. I for see apartments for the next 4 years, and I just can't do that to a big dog.

I LOVE Huskies. They are so smart, loyal, playful, protective and they love to run! I'm planning on getting a cat or two in the next year or so to keep me company during medical school!

I did not know this. I saw an adopted greyhound today. They're such good dogs.

I have an american pit bull terrier. She's hands down the sweetest dog i've ever seen. She and my chocolate lab are best friends.

In high school I worked at a veterinary hospital for about a year and never once felt threatened by pit bulls, rottweilers, german shepherds, dobermans or any of the other "mean" breeds. The dogs that were most likely to bite were the spoiled little ******* lapdogs, like shih tzus, lhaso apsos, pomeranians...

My grandfather has owned greyhounds or whippets my whole life. Both great dogs!!

Everyone expects them to be high-energy dogs, but the exact opposite is true. Even on the track they run for just a couple of minutes on one day and then spend the next week passed out in their kennel. If I take my girls to the dog park for about an hour, they literally do not get out of bed for a good 8 hours after we get back home. Once they went to sleep at about 6 pm and didn't ask to go outside to potty until the next morning. They are lazy butts.

Mine are also animal-assisted therapy dogs. We take them to the hospital and visit patients. They are good at it because they naturally (I never trained them) do not jump on, lick, bark at, hump, or bite anyone, ever. They are very well mannered ladies.

I had a beagle growing up, and she was the best. She was really gentle and sweet, but we always had to keep her tied up (we had a really long chain for her so she could run around, don't worry) because otherwise, she'd put her nose on the ground and follow the scent. We had to pick her up at the pound so many times that they started recognizing her and called us right away. Other than that, she was really well behaved.

Now, I'd love to have a HUGE dog. Like a Newfoundland. I really want a puppy! 😍

Someday I'd like to get an Australian Cattle Dog. I don't know for sure if I'll be up for it in med school, but if I get one, I will for sure adopt from a shelter.

As a former owner of an ACD, please do the dog a favor and don't get one while in Med School...unless you have a roommate, etc... that has time to spend with the dog.

Actually, that would go for all breeds. If I lived by myself, I don't think I'd even have a dog. Not fair to them.

That being said, Beagles kick arse.

Not all little dogs are spoiled, mean, and yappy like everyone says! I've had two shih tzus, and neither one was mean and yappy. Spoiled? Yes. But not mean or yappy. My first was unbelievably laid back, but I think that was partly attributed to his heart condition (may he rest in peace). My second, well, he's a nutcase. He's got the most personality of any dog I've ever met. He'd never hurt a fly, though he's squirmy as hell when it comes time to give non-oral meds. It's pretty entertaining to watch 4 vet techs barely able to hold a 12 lb. dog still. He's very lovable and has an adorable face, so I guess it makes up for his rambunctious nature lol.

I love my American bulldog he's amazing. Not sure what I'd do with out him🙂

I will have to leave my Whippet puppies at my parents house while in school. But they act just like the greyhounds, sleeping all damn day!

I love labs.. and I miss my babies from home..
the first pic is over Christmas break when we got little Izzy, and it is her with Dave, who is 13, and nearing the end of his days 🙁
the second pic is Izzy and Bob, who is camaflouged into the couch..
and the third pic is Izzy recently.. growing up so fast without me 🙁

But yes, I think labs are wonderful, and I would totally have one with me if I could in med school, but I just don't think it would be fair to them

My wife really wants to get a dog - right now she likes Entlebucher Swiss Dogs (kind of smaller/less hairy/maybe healthier than Bernese) and Rhodesian Ridgebacks. I will be in med school and all the kids will be off to college, when the kids were little we have adopted old yellow labs from the pound - five years old+ so they would be mellow around the kids. She will be teaching though and doesn't want to leave a dog alone during the day - maybe doggy day care??

Meet Chocolate...my Australian Shephard..He's about a 18 months old.

Love him to death.

🙁

That is so sad. When I saw that picture I could have cried. I lost my golden retriever, Toby, a little over 2 years ago. He was the first person that I have ever lost in my family...and we did consider him a member of our family. 🙁 It was very hard for us.
