I recently graduated and will be working full time (40-50 hrs) in a research lab at the university I got my degree from and will be applying to MDs this cycle. I will also be part time researching with another lab, taking a graduate level biochemistry course the fall and spring semesters, continuing volunteering (4 hrs/wk) through Big Brothers Big Sisters, and will be training for triathlons. Should I try to add anything else to my schedule to stay competitive through the cycle? My extraculliculars have probably been decent enough so far, but I am concerned that my most recent clinical volunteering ended in December.

Does one of the research activities involve working with patients, or do you have another plan for making your clinical experience current? If your shadowing is on the light side, you might augment that over school breaks.

Let schools know about your ongoing involvement in any pertinent experience through update letters and interview conversations.

I don't think the research will involve patient interaction. Assuming my shadowing has been in depth enough, I should just plan on having ongoing clinical volunteering then?
