Not trying to be pessimistic, but what career are you all considering if it turns out you don't get into med. school (which I'm sure most of you will:clap: ). Since I'm still in high school, of course I'm thinking of other options in general, but I was wondering what if I go through all that work, waste thousands of dollars for school, and not get in, then what?

hey, we're pre-meds. :) for most of us, we don't even consider anything else except med school - we will only consider another career if an ochem test comes back with a bad grade. :) ;)

seriously though, for me i'd consider a master's degree in epidemiology. :)

phd in history - my profs are still trying to convince me hah - but i'll pass for now

That's what I'm currently doing. I applied two years ago to MD programs and an MPH program. If I don't get in this time around, I'll probably do a year of research in my current lab and reapply.

I passed up a lucrative porno career for medical school. I would either fall back on that or try to become a SuperDuperCalafragalistic...SDN Moderator

i'd declare for the NBA draft

both..........at the same time

a friend in college's mom kinda flipped out in her mid 40's and quite a lucrative law practice to become a zamboni driver in boston. look out for her - she also dyed her hair green - shes on tv occasionally. hah.

Never give up on your dreams...but....I would

Get my Ph.D in biomedical enginnering
Become one of the top professional dancers in the world

a ball boy at madison square garden

Bikini Princess, your mailbox is full.....BTW i deleted my post like 3 seconds after i posted it....:D

I don't think I could give up the first time around. I would reapply at least 2 times. If I did not get in I would get my phd in pharmacology, toxicology or something dealing with environmental health or respiratory therapy. But in all honesty I am not sure I would be complete doing those so here's to praying medschool works out.

i'd probably re-apply. If that didn't work, I'd go earn a PH.D in psychology. Probably clinical psychology.........:D

I like the thought of being the band girlfriend...for Backstreet Boys, tho. No, only for Nick Carter...

Seriously, maybe a MPH, or a super secret agent.

You can get your MPH in super secret epidemiology at many schools now. In fact, that's what I'm doing. Just don't tell the tobacco companies.

Don't know if you've ever watched Pinky and the Brain, but at the end of every episode of this cartoon, Pinky asked the Brain, both of whom are lab rodents, "What are we going to do tomorrow night Brain?" and the Brain responds "The same thing we do every night Pinky. Try and take over the world!". That's the mentality you should adopt to get into medical school. Don't think of it as a what if I can't get in, try to think of it more like a when will I get in. If you study hard, do well in your pre-med reqs, have good extra curriculars and do alright on the MCAT, you can eventually get in somewhere. I would recommend reading a book on med school admissions before starting college too, so that you will know exactly what you need to do. It's difficult, but not impossible, to come back from a poor freshman year.

well, I am getting MARRIED on Jan 1st in India, and unfortunately we won't be able to have a honeymoon due to interviews etc. so, if I don't get in.....I get a honeymoon/vacation to Europe for 3 weeks. :)

Nice punishment, eh? :D

@ Kaplan, I ask this question to each of the students as a way to get to know them better. As it IS a class for the MCAT, I don't word it as "if you dont' get in.." but rather "If didn't choose to do medicine, what would you do?" Most are usually still medical-related [nurse, med-tech, EMT, yadda yadda] but I get some great responses, like

-National Geographic photographer
-writer for political magazine, maybe editor one day
-preacher
-elem. school teacher
-high school teacher

almost forgot..

If I didn't choose to do medicine, I would've either been a 6th grade math teacher or done my PhD and be a math prof. to show people that math's as easy as 1,2,3 or 1+2=3 or 3-2=1 or 3/2=1+1/2 or... ;)

OR work in public policy promoting "interspirituality" (understanding and cooperation among different religions and faith-based organizations). :)

Teach!!! Maybe even if I get in!!!
