Just curious for those that are entering the profession, in the process of applying, or are currently in dental school...this question is especially for those that are in dental school or practicing already since you guys have more exposure to the dental field...but what is it about dentistry that you find most interesting? Least interesting?

The last sentence seems very familiar. I saw that question in one of the secondaries while i applied to dental sch.

Is that a question on a secondary app? I haven't submitted my applications yet but that was just an open question I had for people who have had experience learning about dentistry and who actually practice it now...to see what specifically about dentistry do the love now...since people who have experience in dental school or are practicing know a lot more about the dentistry and the evolving nature of the field.

Alright, I know you probably wont use any answer from here anyhow because adcom could probably tell in the interview.

Even though I am not a practicing dentist, but the reason why I like dentistry are the autonomy and the chance to build a long lasting patient relationship. The thing that i like the least is the hugh debt. (it is interesting in a sense that how high it could go =)

Hot moms 😉

Yeah, that question was on my UPENN app too. I said that I was really hyped about the 6 figure salary (what I liked most), and that I couldn't stand people very much (what I dislike about dentistry). They didn't even give me an interview. No one appreciates candid honesty anymore.

So...teethmonkey, last week you wanted everyone to tell you what schools to apply to, and now you want us to hold your hand in filling out your applications. Pretend you have a brain, and some initiative to do things on your own!! If you need others to tell you what you like about the profession you are trying to get into, you really need to find a contingent career option in your life. It's honestly too bad that your grades are as good as they are, because after plagiarizing everyone else?s personal statements and committing every interview question to memory - you will probably get in somewhere.

What I like most:
Although dentistry is not as glorious as say medicine, the job itself is really great:
1. Patient interaction is awsome
2. The results are great (except for non compliant perio patients)
3. Autonomy. As a practioner if you open up your own practice as 78% of dentists do, you have full control over your working environment. For instance, I am a very easy going person who hates malignant working environments. As a practioner, I have full say in how everyone behaves in my office (employees) to maximize productivity... and if they dont, "there is the door." As opposed to medicine where physicians are loosing control over their working environment by the day... and if you are in a hospital, forget about it.
4. The work is extremly interesting... you do a case and you get immidiate results (again, except for some non compliant perio patients)
5. The hours are good
6. The pay is great

What I hate the most:
1. The cost of education is ridiculously high.
2. I hate dental school
My dental school has a very "middle school" feel to it. Very political, very clique oriented. A lot of the kids have mommies and daddies who went to school here and they get special attention from the faculty while the rest of us get the royal shaft. Bottom line: I was hoping for a better educational experience and feel really cheated.

AMMD: Hearing about your experience, I hope that doesnt happen to me. But any chance of finding out where u go to school??

Wow Reed1978...are you bitter over something? Why do you participate in these forums if you just pretend to help people but are just basically out to insult people? Honestly, I am NOT going to plagiarize people's responses, I am not going to memorize things from this forum..I wasn't going to have people TELL me where to apply to. I am fairly new to these forums and up to now, it seemed like people were actually genuinely helpful to people. Like I said, I didnt' know that this was an application question..you probably don't believe me since you don't think i have a brain..but honestly i don't care what you think..I know my own reasons for going into dental school and am perfectly happy with my reasons, but I was curious as to what people WITH experience had to say about the profession since they have more experience than me...obviously, they have much more valid experience than someone who is not yet in the dental field..

I guess I should rephrase the question into...what specifically in the dental field...as in what area of dentistry that you have learned about (issues, problems, equipment types, technology...research..etc.) This is what I was aiming more at..

Anyhow, Reed1978, it is clear that you aren't in the dental profession for any good reason and I feel so sorry for you...it is also that you are not a people person..so good luck succeeding in the dental field.
