im scheduled for an interview at UDM in a few weeks and was looking for a place to stay.

i checked the hotel UDM recommended in the letter they sent and was wondering if the area is safe?

i was looking at some other forums and it seems the area around wayne state university (where the "The Inn on Ferry Street" hotel is near) is a really dangerous area.

is detroit really a warzone as others have said? i have read that even taking the public transportation may be dangerous and should just take the taxi.. is it really that bad? someone even recommended always carrying $50 cash in case you get mugged or else you'll likely be shot. :scared:

do you guys know any better place to book a hotel?

oh wow.. this just looks like a scene from Terminator, post Apocalypse...

Detroit is not as bad as people say it is. I wouldn't walk around by myself, but the area between Wayne State and the Ren Cen is ok. Comerica Park and Ford Field are in that area and there are some great restaurants. I wouldn't take the public transit because it is not reliable. Any hotel near the Ren Cen and Grand Circus Park should be fine.

At least you know that rent's gotta be cheap. Look at all those empty houses! 👍👍👍

anyplace in downtown should be fine... or you could always rent a car and stay in one of the surrounding cities if you're that worried about it.

Bring a bulletproof vest.

Where are you planning on staying in Detroit?... there is a Comfort Inn Downtown, I think around $70, has anyone stayed there?

This is really kind of funny. a guy driving thru the inner city filming the neighborhood. No one is even outside!!! where are the gun toting maniacs??? This could be any inner city neighborhood. You are going to visit or contemplating going to school there??? most likely you will not even live in this part of town. In any unfamiliar place just use wisdom. You should be fine.

Haha, didn't you see 8 mile? I think you need to take a microphone to your interview and freestyle. You will likely be accepted on the spot

Ok that video is accurate, but you won't be driving through the hood during your interview. If the school recommended a hotel they probably recommended it because it's safe, unless they recommended hotel yorba...
I've lived around Detroit my whole life so here's some words of advice:

1. Don't go out at night by yourself (just like any big city).

Like any big city, bad stuff can happen, so try not to put yourself in bad situations. If you're worried you can stay at my house and i'll drive you in the morning on my way to class. My interview is jan 27th so if yours is the same day, maybe i'll see you there.

But seriously, Detroit is a great school. Not a great city, but hey, great patient base!

Detroit is not as bad as people make it to be. I just interviewed there yesterday. Great school... just don't judge a book by its cover.

"it's so polluted that all our fishes have aids. see a river that catches on fire..... at least we're not detroit! we're not detroit!" lol!

hahaha that's hilarious

but anyways if i am lucky enough to be accepted here, i'm really considering detroit-mercy now
seems like a great school

just a question though. it seems like most people commute to school but from what i have read so far, detroit doesnt have a subway system nor a great transit system.

so do most students have their own cars and drive to school?
that would kind of suck since you would have additional costs for gas and insurance...

also it seems like some canadian students commute to school from windsor, ontario.
are there any advantages to this? (cheaper rent? safer? )

does anyone walk to school from a nearby neighborhood?

I think with your "instruments" charges you get a can of mace and a currette/knife, so you are good.
