Hey guys,
I just wanted to hear from some of you guys about why it is you are going into psych. I love my rotation and listening to the residents about how passionate they are about there field.

I feel that my greatest strength is comunicating with people. I really enjoy listening and working with people one on one and I really think that psych may be my calling. I know there is so much about the field that I dont know about and would love to hear about it from you guys. I have heard some of the negatives, like lower income, from some of the residents but that hasnt really discouraged me. I know I am going to want to wake up to a career that I love doing and not dread waking up to in the middle of the night.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

First and foremost it was the only thing in medicine that I actually enjoyed. I actually was excited to get up each day and go see patients. It was the only rotation where I was told by attendings that I had a great skill with this field-the other fields I just got yelled at!

I too feel that my greatest strenght is talking to patients-even on other fields they would say I should do psych cause i was useless with procedures and stuff but would really spend hours talking to patients. And I dont like how other fields do not value or have time to talk to patients.

Second-lifestyle, lifestyle lifestyle-maybe this is a bad reason but the residencies for the most part I amlooking at have cush residencies. 2 of them even have home call only starting year 1. A few have no call after year 2. All the residents in psych I meet are really happy, rested and have tons of free time. Even better is life as an attending-esp. in private practice. I want to work 4.5 days per week and never have call and psych was probably the only field to offer this.

Last-and a great perk-to me psych has the most promise to create a business out of it. I have a business background and enjoy that aspect. I love the fact you can mostly set up a cash pay practice if you go private and dont have to deal with the crap of insurance companies and stuff. Also you are very flexible in what you do with the field-the skill of talking to people and bascially knowing how to deal with people-is valuable in all walks

Lots to love-I relaly do not get why its the least competitive and looked down upon-I LOVE psych-well I liked nothing else in medicine peroid so my choice was easy!

And I also enjoy the pathology and psychopharmacology as well. The most interesting drugs were always psych drugs and I love the biological pharm aspect of psychiatry. I also enjoy the mental illnesses and the fact that although in ways they have strict criteria-they all present in such diverse ways-and I think this makes psych one of the least monotonous fields out there

HI,
How did you chose your residency program? I am pretty much clueless 3rd year, and I know I need to start setting up rotations, etc. I really have no idea how to approach choosing where to go. Are there any books that rank the programs, etc? Where are you attending if you mind me asking?

spending more time with patients then other specialties, and the fact that "speaking and listening to our patients" is the most rewarding exam I've ever performed in my 3rd and 4th years!

Being the consult of last resort in the general hospital setting... when the internists/surgeons/OBs/neurologists can't figure out what's going on with the pt, they decide it's "psych issues" and consult us. Then we get to make the diagnosis (9 times out of 10 not psychiatric) just because we take the time to a) listen to the pt, b) read the whole chart, and c) not rely on tests/labs. You get to help the pt, and look pretty damn smart in the process.

GUT FEELING, GUT FEELING, GUT FEELING - learn to acknowledge it now while you can, you'll find its about to save your ass many a times deuring your rotations 😉
