What is San Antonio (UTHSCSA) known for?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe they are more focused on academics.

Also, They don't make you buy textbooks. I believe they assign you with two options for computer usage (i.e. Dell$$$/Macbook$$$$) in which you can use for your e-textbooks. They do have 3 month off for summers, correct me if I'm wrong?

Awesomeness.
First year is alot of academics, but we get clinical experience in SIM lab. Second year shifts to 50-50 clinical(SIM) and academics. Third year is a shocker with real-life patients everyday. Senior year is clinic, clinic, clinic. Lots of opportunities to do research, projects, extracurricular. UTHSCSA offers lots of rotations off-campus that other schools don't offer. During summers, you have to do a selective and you can choose from research, projects, clinic work in Laredo, Harlingen, Brownsville, SA, online work....
It is tough, but if you do what you should be doing and taking advantage of what is available, you will enjoy being here. Sometimes if feels like students and staff/admin are not on the same page, but what can you do. All the problems that SA has exist at the other Texas schools, so you can't compare that. I will say the experience and opportunities offered are bar none.

Summers are short, prob shortest of all Texas schools. We get about 6 weeks. But you must do your summer selective during those weeks, unless you study for boards after your second year-no selective needed. The longest selective is 2 weeks, so you could technically enjoy 4 weeks of no school between each year

Why are the summers so short? Are the semester longer than a lot of other dental schools? If so, why?

Probably having the longest initials of any dental school.

initials? please elaborate 🙂

why? not sure, you can ask the admin. We start in July, end mid-Dec like other schools. Start in January (2nd prob) and end mid-May like other schools. You can whine all you want about it and compare to the other Texas schools, but atleast we don't go to school year-round.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Dental School.
This relatively young dental school offers a world-class experience for its lucky pre-doctoral students. Faculty in this dental school developed the first digital panoramic x-ray device in the United States. In the last ranking of US News & World Report (1996), this school was ranked #1. A cooperative atmosphere contributes strongly to this dental school’s excellence. Junior and senior off-campus clinical rotations enhance the students’ exposure to the clinical world of dentistry. The General Practice Based Comprehensive Care Clinical Program uses the model of small group practices, and provides the opportunity for excellent, timely, and relevant training with a deep focus on in-depth patient care. The Dental School at the Health Science Center ranked fourth in publications and 11th in scientific impact among the world’s 760 dental schools from 1998 to 2002. Excellent training and in-depth exposure to advanced aspects of dentistry are sure-fire ways to have a dental school stand above the rest of the crowd.
