I can't find my old TI-85 Graphing Calculator from high school and I am wondering what you all recommend that I buy for my pre-pharm classes🙁Physics, Bio 1 & 2, Chem 1 & 2, Organic Chem 1 & 2, Calculus)--I also want something that will be good for Pharmacy School as well. I am looking into TI and HP models presently. Thanks in advance.

Ignore the sad face in the previous post...I don't know how that ended up there.

I love my TI-89 but it really depends on your school. I love my calculator to death, but for calc2 and physics I wasn't allowed to use it for my exams.

I like my ti-84 plus and the ti-83 plus is good too. And like the op said many classes won't let you use the t1-89 so I'd just avoid it. The ti-86 isn't great I'm told.

Why won't they let you use the TI-89--are they scared ppl will use it to cheat?

I rocked a TI 89 for all of my math and science for undergrad.

On my first calculation test = we were told to buy some cheesy calculator with basic functions = I wouldn't blow too much money on a pimp calculator - you wont be able to use it on most things.

Ti-89 will do calculus for you

I'm just basically looking for something that will cover all my bases and will be a good long-term investment. Along with something that isn't banned from exams.

I'm guessing that no one will recommend a HP?

Word.
But if your instructor sees you use it in a test, it might be taken away, or you have to put it away, and your left with no calculator.... 🙁

TI-83 Plus works just fine for me ...

So basically the TI-89 is a great calculator, but not worth the risk.

I actually had a science teacher take my TI-85 away from me in high school and that was back in the early 90's. And back then we used to play Tetris and stuff on there.

I still love my clunky old TI-81. 'Inherited' it from my high school math teacher when the school upgraded to a newer model... hasn't let me down yet.

I remember that blue thing--LOL. A lot kids used that when I was in high school...and now they are all doctors--no joke either.

I used to have a TI-89 in high school but it got stolen in the gym. My general chemistry 1 teacher said only use a TI-30XA scientific calculator to calculate dimensional analysis problems. So I bought one for 10 bucks.

Here is what mine looks like:

Does anyone know if this calculator will be useful throughout undergrad chemistry? Do I need to buy another TI-89?

I used a $7 scientific calculator for all of my undergrad courses (chem, physics, calculus, biostats, etc.)

Stay away from the TI-86?

Sounds like everyone likes the TI-83 and TI-84 though.

For most of your classes you won't need anything more than a scientific calculator. Something with sin/cos/tan, square root, log/ln, and exponents should cover you. You can find something like that for really cheap (under $10). I really like TI calculators and haven't been pleased with other brands I've had. For calculus, you might be required to get a graphing calculator. For that I would go with the TI-83. Most people have those, so any function your teacher talks about on the calculator you will be able to follow right along with. All of the TIs are pretty similar so you could probably get by with another model too. TI-83s are also useful for statistics, which you will probably end up taking if not as a pre-pharm, you will in pharm school.

I certainly agree you. I was checking stuff out again tonight on TI's site and I think that I'm going to go with the TI-84 PLUS. I'm sold on that one 🙂

I liked my Ti-84 for my math classes b/c my school doesn't allow the TI-89. Also, the chemistry dep't at my school doesn't allow any graphing calculators, so I got the cheap TI-30XA b/c the buttons are arranged similar to the TI-84.

Contact your dept heads before you invest in an expensive calculator.

I think that these are great (non-graphing) scientific calculators:

TI-36X II and TI-36X Solar

The best calculator for me is... Casio Fx-570ms... it's the best and fastest calculator to use... because it's so user friendly.... the only thing.. is u got to get used to it ... but once u know it ... it will be fast ... and easy. ..

Casio Fx-570ms !

It’s the one I have. TI 84 plus has just about the same setup as the TI 83 and all of my instructors used either a 83 or 84, so following along was a breeze.

Stay away from TI 89. It is the main calculator restriction I have consistently heard. It basically does all the work for you, so in my calc class we were not allowed to use it.

Like some students, I tried to save money by making do with a nongraphing calculator. But at some point you will have to get a graphing calculator (usually in Calculus). It is best to buy graphing calculator now and be familiar with its funtions so that you can keep up in classes like Calculus.

i never used anything more than a scientific calc in undergrad, if it was even allowed on an exam. Graphing calcs (TI 83's, 86's, etc...) were banned due to the ability to program on them.

In p-school now, the professors provide us simple 4 function calculators for tests.

Yeah, spend <$10 on a decent scientific calc...better yet, buy it used..you won't really use it.

After a lengthly discussion on here I am going with:

TI-84 PLUS (Graphing Calculator)

and

TI-36X II (Non-Graphing Scientific)

Wow..my calc prof WANTED us to have a TI89! It was her recommended calc! I've also never been told I can't use it in any other class. Crazy!

Awesome for me 😀

I was able to use my TI-89 all throught undergrad. The professors figured it was a hassle to ask people to buy/get a non-scientific so they gave up trying.

I Love my TI-30XIIS. It clean and simple to use. And you can use on Chem. exams (unlike my TI-83+)

buy the TI-84 - more memory & a little faster (than the TI-83). should last a long time. stay away from TI-89, etc. - engineers & mathematicians generally use that one. It's more than you need (I know this because my brother has one). So, I say, go for something that is built to last (if you take care of it)...My TI-84 has lasted me over 3 years now. Changing batteries is the only thing that sucks...but if you remember to close your calculator after each use, you won't need to replace batteries for at least 3-5 months (depends on how much you use it).

Check Amazon for good deals:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ils?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1235072363&sr=8-1&seller=

http://www.amazon.com/Texas-Instrum...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1235072363&sr=8-2 - Silver Edition

I believe the only difference between Silver and the regular one is larger memory...And if you don't mind buying used, you can get an even better deal from here. Check your local shops as well if you really need this ASAP.

Thanks. Your right about the memory thing:

TI-84 PLUS = 480K

TI-84 PLUS SILVER EDITION = 1.5MB

yeah, in my opinion, you don't really need a large amount of memory unless you want to store many games and other applications, which I think is the wrong reason to buy one of these "nifty" calculators.

I used a TI-83 Plus in high school, so that's what I used during my undergrad years and I survived in all of my chem, physics, and math classes.

extremely jealous of both of you. My calc 1 and calc 2 classes = no calculator.....this means i actually have to put in the effort to memorize certain things that should really be looked up. 👎

I was reading online that some schools want you to only have a "non-programmable scientific calculator"--and that anything else is banned.

TI-89 TITANIUM

and a four function.

I second a Casio. I use a model similar to the one mentioned above. After spending some time with those, I've come to realize that non-graphing TI calculators are junk.

Don't bother with an expensive graphing calculator unless you are told you will need it. As someone said, there is a good chance such calculators would be banned because of cheating.

If anyone is looking for deals on TI Graphing Calculators, check out EBAY...I picked up a TI-86 for under $30...Not bad 🙂
