I find myself in a unique predicament because I am part of an BS/MD guaranteed program, although this gives me the security of acceptance it does not tie me to that medical school in that I have the opportunity to apply out.

that being said, unlike many of my peers I am taking the 4 year route instead of 3 and out to med school, more specifically 3.5 and will have a semester free to do anything.

Does anyone with any experience have some suggestions as to how to fill this semester? Or is it better left unfilled?

dude go travel. I spent my last summer in Taiwan and in Puerto Rico. It was bomb.

if i get accepted next year i plan to party like a rockstar.

Official Study Abroad
Learn a language immersion program.
Do a Research Project (get paid).
Volunteer

i'm in the EXACT same situation. i think i'm going to apply out and graduate with 1 semester to spare. I'm thinking about doing research, but what i'd love to do is do some sort of medical volunteer work (NOT hospital volunteering... i mean like impoverished areas). Ideally, i could go abroad, but that wouldn't allow me to travel for med school interviews and stuff.

any one know of any good and flexible medical volunteer opportunities?

Hangout with friends, enjoy life and DO NOTHING!! since you know you cant do that in med school. that is what i'm doing now since im too poor to travel the world

I graduate in December and start med school in the fall. I'd like to travel, but I'm pretty much broke, so I'm trying to find a job for my major (engineering). Only trouble is, no one wants to hire someone who's going to be gone in 7 months... I'm also looking into paid research positions at my school but am finding nothing. I really really don't want to have to move back home. 🙁

Thats why you dont tell them you are gone in 7 months =P :meanie:

But keep asking for internships/research.. work aid all that good stuff and :luck:

traveling is definitely the way to go. getting the opportunity to explore different places and see the world is something that a lot of people never have the opportunity to do (due to responsibilities at home, work, etc.) Take it while you can! and document everything along the way.

and I'd definitely take a few weeks to just sit and home and do nothing. Between work, school and volunteering, I miss that. haha. 🙂

I would do an abroad program somewhere

ditto situation with the BS/MD program!

what are some good medical volunteer programs abroad?

Travel, enjoy yourself as much as possible and probably the best answer in my opinion: sleep! Get as much as possible because most people will not be able to sleep like they did in college.

I would do absolutely nothing. You'll regret doing something intensive with time you could have otherwise spent chilling once med school starts.
