No program? Do they plan on getting one? Anyone with any information?

The program lost accreditation in 2004 and has never reopened. I do not know if they plan on restarting one or not. It really is a shame as Regional Medical Center is very busy and would be a great place for anesthesia residency.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I noticed they haven't updated their website since 2000. I also heard that Regional Medical Center was being slowly phased out and will eventually be shut down. I wonder if this is true or is a rumor. Anyways, I was just curious.

Currently, the Anesthesiology residency through the U. of TN is at Knoxville. I don't think they have any plans to reestablish the one in Memphis.

As for the Regional Medical Center (The MED) it is in no way slowly being phased out. As with any county owned hospital, you do hear the occasional rumor of cash flow problems. However, the MED is essential to the city of Memphis and to the U. of TN's medical school. It is also the only level-one trauma center within 150 mile radius of Memphis, serving six states (this makes it one of busiest trauma centers in the nation, over 4000 pts per year). So I think it is safe to say, there are alot people looking out for the MED and making sure that it is here for a long time to come.:)

The MED's not going anywhere. :)
As far as the residency, I hear different things from different non-gas attendings. Unable to keep good teaching faculty, lack of residents in years past & never bothered to reopen, etc. They have SRNA's at The MED, though (I'm almost 100% positive on this), so perhaps some day it will come back?

So the scoop on the program is this: They had a hard time keeping teaching faculty, the program was spread over way too many hospitals, and there was a problem getting pain exposure. That's the word from a former UT gas graduate who spoke with the old director about why it shut down. :)
