I am a pre med student. For a pre health class as our final we are having mock medical school interviews were our professor will be the interviewer. I don't really know what to expect and don't want to do terrible since its our final. Do they mostly ask about issues in the healthcare system and your opinions on it and how you'd improve it or is it more centered around you like alot of questions about grades and college and stuff?
Also for the class I have to shadow a physician. I know a lot of people shadow for a duration of time like a semester or year et.. If I just need to shadow them for 4 hours, should I specify that in my email or just send an email saying that I would like to shadow them?
Thanks guys.

"Why do you want to be a doctor"

Insert naive, non-nonsensical extremely lofty goal, in desired field here

"you're accepted!"

I was asked some stupid questions and others that were more relevant. Tell me about yourself was common.

I was only asked once about anything healthcare related as far as the system goes.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? Give answer in (newtons per yard)*hours*years (do not neglect leap years and assume the wood in question is maple)

more about yourself, less about health care system

edit: and you could get more than 4 shadowing hours if you are a premed--would be beneficial for applications

(Sorry, OP. Got some good news today, and apparently that turns me into the least helpful person ever.)

Know the ins and outs of your own application and your path to medicine, have a basic understanding of healthcare in the US and the Affordable Care Act, and be prepared for hypothetical ethical scenarios. That's general interview prep, without knowing anything about your professor. As to which types of questions you'll be asked, specifically...that's always interviewer-dependent.

Definitely mention that you only need to shadow them for four hours in the email. The most common reason physicians aren't able to take on students for shadowing is the amount of time it eats up. Good luck!

There is a section of SDN where you can get interview feedback. People post questions that they were asked. You could pull thousands of questions from those. The things that I have answered the most are about my motivation for becoming a doctor, my family life and how it shaped me, my opinions and solutions for making US healthcare work and plenty of hypothetical ethics questions. It is also good to be able to say what you want in a medical school (for the Why X school) and to know who you are. Strengths, weaknesses, adversity, insight into who you are and where you need to go.

-why do you want to be a doctor
-what would you do if you weren't accepted
-why (this specific school)
-tell me about this shadowing experience (and by "tell", they mean "reflect on and share how it has shaped you into a person who wants to pursue medicine")
-tell me about this research experience
-tell me about this volunteering experience
-tell me about this leadership role
-a random ethics dilemma question
-how would you fix modern health care
-pros/cons of the affordable care act
-tell us about a time your opinion on something did a complete 180

ive interviewed at four schools and being comfortable with this handful of questions has helped me through all of them. of course, different schools asked different things so there were times wehre i had to come up with stuff on the fly, but i'd prefer that to walking in with a ton of rehearsed answers. i'd suggest getting comfortable with this set of questions, checking the "interview feedback" section on sdn, and practice your speaking skills
