What kinda car you in? :P

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am currently rocking an 03 Pacifica which requires me to hulk out and punch the ignition to seat the key before turning it. 120k miles of sexy.

If I fellow, I will probably 2015 mustang gt with track pack. Unless the pacifica lasts long enough. Then 2015 Corvette z51.

Someday though. late-model Maserati quattroporte. Yummy.

You will want to win the lottery twice if you get a Diablo...... you will get about .5 miles between breakdowns that will run you 10K a go. And if you really want to go further than the local shop you will need a trailer to pull a spare car on...... if you can get it off the drive way with out it overheating that is....

maserati-3200-gt-05.jpg

imo the 3200 gt is the way to go for non lottery winners..... the last of the proper masserati with a Ferrari V8 at an reasonable price...... imo these will only rise in price from now on.... (you can't get the boomerang brake lights in the US as far as I know but if you sneak one past customs then I reckon you will be quids in....)

Ha, well usually my buddies and I only play the Powerball/Megamillions when they are like close to 200mil so hopefully that will be enough to cover the Diablo running costs. 😀
That Maserati does not do it for me with the front end.

With a lot of German luxury cars it can make sense to buy used. There are quite a few people who drive those cars for a year or 2, keep them in great condition and move on to the next. Can save you a ton of $$

Well if you only look at the entry cost. But they are going to be notorious for high upkeep costs.

I was looking at a 2004 Audi S4 for $10k. An absolutely great $$/HP value.

Well the catch was that at around 100k miles (which that car was at) you'd likely need to do the timing chain service...which could set you back a cool $5000 due to needing to drop the motor partially.

Mine is 3 yr old with 19k miles, but was CPO so is under full factory warranty and has all maintenance included for 2 more years. Check around for extended warranties.

Thats at 75k if I'm correct and yes you can find CPOs or get one that still has a warranty on it via a private party. At that time you can go to the dealer and extend your service plan etc.

Don't buy a German car used. Trust me. Too much $$$ to afford repairs. They are unreliable and should be leased only IMO

Maserati makes some beautiful cars and if there's anything better sounding than a naturally aspirated Ferrari V8, I'm yet to hear it. I had a 2013 GranTurismo Sport. Loved it, but it was time for a replacement aka upgrade 🙂 Should be here in a few weeks
What did you end up getting?

2012 Acura TSX. Nice car, not over the top, pretty dependable. Considering a newer model after fellowship and moving back to the mainland USA. I am also considering an Acura SUV for the new wife. At some point, though, I would still like to have my, "toy", whether it's a Porsche or older Maserati.

👍

VW GTI 6spd man ( the fun car) and VW toureg TDI (the practical one). Interestingly, with the diesel, they get almost the same fuel economy.

Not my experience at all. Right before med school I bought an 8 year old BMW 328i, and it was solid (and an amazing ride) throughout those 4 years. I moved to SF for residency and unfortunately couldn't justify keeping it.

Right now I drive a 2001 Porsche 911. Yeah, it'd be smarter to get a Honda, but I've loved cars since I was a kid and get a lot of enjoyment from driving.

Well, my other half is currently negotiating with a few places for a job in our future locale, trying to limit weekends and on-call days. We're big on outdoors stuff, so we're trying to get a good mix of solid weekends. The boat is just a necessity, it's near the top of my Maslovian pyramid.

The first big purchase I made when I became an attending was to trade in the car I had all through med school and residency/fellowship to get a new Prius. I have to admit there was a part of me that wanted to splurge on a Tesla but the practical side won out.

It's fun to see what everyone is driving though!

Restored this V12 Jag XJS on weekends in residency:

It was fun to work on, and fast, though thirsty. Contained lots beautiful walnut interior, and had a dodgy electrical system. Learned a great deal from this car. Sold it on to another enthusiast.
One of my top 10 all-time fav cars. It's on my ahirt list for a restoration project, but I was warned about the electrical issues.

I bought a CPO Mercedes Benz AMG. The warranty covered most of the issues, but the things not covered were $$$. Beautiful car though. I still love her and I can't help but smile when I'm driving.

I'm driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla that doesn't have too many miles on it. I'll drive it as long as I can.

But would love to splurge on a Jeep Wrangler Sport Edition someday. Or a Tesla. Or both!

Touche! My wife is the truck person in the household, I'll just borrow her vehicle when I need to transport the boat.

I don't have the space to store a boat on a trailer at my home, though, so I would need to get a slip somewhere. I don't know this area well enough yet to have any idea where that would be. Also, there is seriously way more types of boats than I realized....no idea what the differences are.

You guys are making me feel indulgent with the Subaru Outback I purchased a few months ago. Not particularly an original car where I live, but it's fuel efficient for all wheel drive and is nice for getting up the mountain in the winter and for driving on jacked up unpaved roads.

There's an old beaten up outback with a pro-vaccination bumper sticker in the doctor's lot. Must be a pediatrician.

Unsolicited advice: fractional boat ownership clubs. Monthly cost for everything including fuel and insurance is the same as the cost of a slip for an owner.

Which one did you buy? I was considering the C63 and E63.

CLK63 AMG. I bought her when I took my first faculty gig ~4yr ago.

Speaking of repair costs...she's in the shop again. I blew my surp. belt (possibly alternator) last night. Prob need to get the fan replaced and possibly the coolant reservoir...I think it cracked when the belt snapped.

I still love her though. I use public transportation in the winter, but I'm investing in a second car to have around for shop time/bad weather...probably a Jeep Wrangler or maybe a Cherokee.

Picked her up two years ago at a government auction for 12.3k. BMW 335I, red leather. BMW twin turbo V6 with custom tuning. Mostly do my own repairs. I love cars...

I remember when the N54 engine came out for your E92. It changed the tuning game when owners could add a Cobb tune and hit 400hp reliably all day long - more power than the S62 engine in my M.

Hey, a fellow enthusiast! I have a JB4 tune with custom exhaust with no cats and a dual cone intake and suspension mods. I had a modded e46 for the longest while which you can catch in the photo above. Always wanted to have an M. Are you still driving a bmw?

Yeah! Fellow bimmer guy! I bet yours is as fast as mine with the tune you have. Here's mine - a '00 M5. I have a Dinan exhaust on it but it's completely stock otherwise. It's 16 years old now!

Leaf. More for the $ savings than the environment, though.

Hopefully you leased that. The battery degradation on those things is horrible and as a result depreciation is significantly higher than most other cars.

Well I did the flip of that. Let someone else eat the depreciation and buy it used.

Chev Equinox ('05, 120K, and paid for)--more vehicle for the $ than a comparable CRV or RAV4, and handy in the winter.
Mrs. PsychDoc drives (what else) a Honda Odyssey--also >5 yrs old and paid for.

Looking around the docs' parking lot here I see Priuses, Escapes, more Hondas and Toyotas than BMWs or Audis--but a couple of those. And of course, Volvos with bike racks...

That's because of the part of the country you're in! Move to Miami Beach and the ratio will reverse!

I am hoping to buy an airplane one day. I wouldn't mind having a catamaran and a waterski boat too. And a porsche. For now, I am stuck with a leased Volkswagen.

I'm hoping for the upcoming Tesla economy model - rumored that it is aimed at starting around 35k and runs only on electricity. My main interest is in long term cost reduction - haven't done the math yet to see if the extra price beats out not having to buy gas
