I feel like I keep hearing people talk about their clinical and research experience or MCAT scores. What sorts of hobbies and such do you all have? Or did you feel that you didn't really have time to do "fun" stuff? Did you end up listing them on your applications somewhere or discuss them at interviews?

I scrapbook and bake cupcakes. I do yoga. I really want to volunteer at an animal shelter but I don't have time. 😡 At some point I really wanted to learn how to do origami with dollar bills but it's harder than I thought! I kinda want to find something else FUN to do that doesn't have to do with med school. I feel like I'm losing my sanity.

Most of my stuff is non-medical because my job for the last 6 years has been extremely clinical.

I spent a year in New York City as a starving, but (barely) working, musician. I played bass, piano, guitar and sometimes drums. 🙂

Also in the arts, I write. I have a bunch of non-fiction articles published as well as some short fiction that I've sold. Last year, I wrote and directed a short film. I'm getting ready to write another short story for a contest put on by paper in Austin. I mainly write horror satire (think: Chuck Palahniuk).

Exercise used to be a pretty big hobby of mine. I swam on a master's swim team, but I haven't had time to do it for a while, and I miss it. At some point soon, I'd love to get back into it.

Published? That is awesome! Chuck<3 Gah, I remember when I used to read and write (for fun) all the time. I miss those days.

My job is very medical, so I supplement by a lot of hobbies that I love to do, and volunteer at our local human society and a nursing home around christmas time.

Best part? I'm doing it for me. Screw adcoms. 😆

MT Headed wins this thread by default.

For my part, I watch lots of foreign and independent movies and play a **** ton of basketball. Rock climbing - more independent climbing and not the climbing gym. Workout - Crossfit and P90X.

I was a freelance writer for a year, so I have about 300 trade articles published. I just started getting into fiction, so I've only got a few of those. But Chuck is my favorite author, and it's kind of obvious. We both write in first person, present tense, and my narrators are usually borderline loons or completely detached from reality. But no one has said that it sounds too much like him yet, so I guess I'm okay!

Same here. 😀

I started a book club because I love to read books. (Albeit, most are young adult romances but can you really judge a girl?) I'm kind of scared to put it on my application though so I think I'm going to leave it off. Can you imagine me answering questions? Our books have ranged from the Hunger Games trilogy to Hush Hush. 😳 Oh well, I love them!

I bake too! Cakes though, not cupcakes. I like a bigger canvas. Funny thing is that I just like decorating them, not eating it. It helps relieve stress.

I really like music and go to tons of concerts. IDK... everything else consists of normal things.

I play in my university's orchestra (cello), take pictures, scrapbook/other crafty things, I used to do yoga regularly but I've kinda fallen off the wagon...

😍
I wanted to mention my love of Doctor Who, but I didn't. One of my student interviewers asked me what my favorite TV show was though, so I got to talk about it a little 🙂 You're always going to get the "what do you do in your spare time?" question, so talk about your reading there if you don't want to put it in AMCAS.

Toured with a rock/funk band across the east coast, give lessons in bass/guitar, played in jazz groups. Multi instrumentalist.

What did you learn on? I totally forgot to include that. My step-dad had a Piper Turbo Arrow that I learned to fly on.

for hobbies I go caving, camping, rock climbing, hiking, kayaking 1-2x a week and martial arts class several evenings a week. In winters I snowboard like crazy and do more martial arts. I also work 30-35 hrs a week and do plenty of volunteering.

It was fun, and the two were linked. Spent a summer working for Boeing on the shuttle main engines and external tank integration, and they paid for the first half of my flight training. I did those on 152's. Nothing special, but they were fun to fly and pretty forgiving. You could spin one and pretty much be guaranteed to be able to recover 🙂

That's awesome. My step-dad taught me to fly when I was 8. I was too short to see over the instrument panel, so I learned to fly IFR first. Kind of backwards, but it worked for me. Also, when I was actually tall enough to see over the top, we flew to Hilton Head and were forced to go through a bad thunderstorm. Already being proficient at IFR helped a ton. Had some awful shimmies though, and my cousin ralphed all over me from the back seat.

I was a project manager at a large engineering firm for a while and I earned my license based on experience and examination (no college degree).... before that I played drums in a band and got to go on tour in the western states and Europe..... I survived financially by delivering pizza and working pt at a cable station doing master control work and vid edits....presently I've been raising my little sister who is now 14 and going to college, which I really enjoy! hum.....and I got married young and am going on 10 years, if that counts 🙄.

You, sir/madam, are awesome.

As for my own, non-medical hobbies/activities...I guess it depends on what you consider medical. For example, a lot of my volunteer work is focused on the mentally ill; however, it is in a non-clinical setting (and it's 100% NOT for adcoms). I am starting to get my feet wet in policy and political types of activities. I'm also involved with Amateur Radio, which has brought me into contact with organizations and groups as varied as The Red Cross to those that organize Road Rally competitions. I've designed websites since I was fairly young and have created a few for various businesses/non-profits/school clubs/bands. I also attempt to draw, write (focus on religious satire), create graphic arts and take photographs. I can't play music to save my life; but I've worked for bands selling and designing merchandise before. I also do research that sometimes is not related to medicine (policy research -- I actually would like to only focus it on health policy; but, being from a small, LAC, this isn't always easy).

I play piano (self-taught). I body build (but I do not like one, but I'm very fit and strong)--bench presses, squats, deadlifts, power cleans and press, etc. I also enjoy music, clubbing and chasing girls, but I don't have enough time to keep up with the females.

Forgot to add: I cook a lot as well.

Ha. Thanks, I guess. I've done a lot of stuff, but I don't list most of it on apps because I haven't done it in a while, or it's not something I think everyone would find acceptable, lol.

What's that involve (feel free to slap me if that's a dumb question--long day at work)? My non-medical research has been about copyright law. Fascinating, I know. 😴

You should list what you have talked about here.

It will make you an interesting applicant.

Policy research, as a term, can be incredibly broad and applied to essentially any policy issue that you can imagine -- from healthcare to texting while driving to taxing the wealthy. It includes both primary (collecting the data yourself, usually through survey) and secondary research (analyzing existing data), as well.

As my career goal is to be an MD/PhD in Health Policy focusing on mental health, I will create an example surrounding that:

Say you wanted to see how well the mental health care needs of the mentally ill in a particular state are being met -- in particular, the needs of the uninsured. You would conduct a study to see how many uninsured residents are experiencing mental health issues and, out of those, see who is not getting treatment or not getting adequate treatment. There is a good chance you will find the majority are not having their need adequately met.

Then, say, as a result of your research and the advocates who took it to the state government, a miracle happens and a new law is passed that says X amount of money will go towards funding outreach and treatment programs for those who are uninsured and mentally ill. After the law and some time have passed, you may go back and redo your earlier study. Most likely, you will still find that their needs are not adequately met.

After these studies are published, someone may publish an analysis of the effectiveness of the new law -- or, rather, its lack of effectiveness (secondary research).

That's the basic idea of it anyway. As I said, it is sort of broad and can cover a wide range of topics. I'd give you the specifics of what I have been involved in; but I'm too paranoid about anonymity. You can PM me if you like.

Oh, and I don't find Copyright Law boring at all.

I've been training various martial arts (Jeet Kune Do, Escrima, Hapkido, BJJ) for about 2 years now, hoping to go for my black belt in Hapkido in May. I'm currently the treasurer of the Hapkido club on campus and if I decide to stay enrolled in undergrad for an extra year have been encouraged to run for club president. Also, I've been playing guitar for 6 years or so, hoping to get back into that a bit more pretty soon. Also, I play a lot of basketball and other sports with friends, and I love working out and being in shape. I'm not entirely sure how much of this I'll put in my application, but probably a good bit of it because i think it is a part of who I am that may help make me stand out a little more as an applicant.

Everyone seems to have such interesting experiences! I don't do anything super exciting, just a lot of public health/health psychology research and community activism work, particularly related to violence prevention, queer issues and youth/peer education.

I had to opportunity to play junior A hockey for a year. Personal trainer for a few years, followed by being hired as a general manager of a health club, hockey coach, baseball coach, realtor, etc.

ROTC and service projects associated with ROTC, intramurals, JROTC advisor, wrote for my school's paper/literary journal, did a political science internship one year, and stuff for SigEp fraternity... There's plenty of time for stuff other than research/volunteering in college, as well as medical school (did research, taught a class, served as a college adviser, and did a lot of service work in M1/M2).

I play in my university's orchestra (cello), take pictures, scrapbook/other crafty things, I used to do yoga regularly but I've kinda fallen off the wagon...

I play cello too! I was in my school orchestra, but I graduated so now I am in a community orchestra. I played chamber music and I do a lot of gigs (weddings, events, etc) and teach cello lessons. I am also in some professional music organizations.

I also run (when I am not lazy). I have done triathlons and am signed up for my first half marathon this spring.

I love to travel and have studied abroad in Spain and Japan. 🙂

I feel like a do more things but I am drawing a blank...

Awesome, I played viola! SDN orchestra via skype anyone?

Good luck on your half. That is awesome. 50% of the effort is signing up.

I fenced all throughout highschool and my undergrad. that's pretty much it. Now I work two part time jobs for a university so I'm technically full time: I do both research & clinical diagnostic work so my CV is looking good

tutor physics at school tutoring center
physics research
traditional korean folk music group

I like to do Zumba! I also play violin, but barely had time to play this past semester. 🙁
I also was involved this past summer in an interfaith dialogue group, mostly between Jewish, Muslim, and Christian students. We went on a retreat for a week that my school paid for. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I ever had in college!

I'm a piano teacher 🙂 I got my teaching degree (ARCT) from the Royal Conservatory of Music right after I graduated from high school and I've been teaching ever since. I usually do weekends/evenings around my hometown, and I teach for free at an orthodox church to students who can't afford to pay for lessons. It's one of the most enjoyable things I've ever done, and its really rewarding to see your students progress each week!

I also cook and bake a ton and I've been working on a recipe book for a while...I figure if I can never be a doctor, I'd like to open my own restaurant or cafe 😛

I tutor Inorganic and organic chem, work in a marketing office, volunteer at a poverish Spanish speaking elementary school, and for hobbies I play piano, scuba dive, do underwater photography, and snowboard.

i workout alot(dropped 120 pounds), tutor science courses, do greek life, work on my car, play pingpong, and religiously play n64 lol

I'm a dedicated fencer (both coaching and competing), I surf, hike, play the violin, and love to travel.

I <3 cooking, things like chicken cacciatore, various pasta dishes, sticky lemon chicken and pretty much enjoy learning how to make anything. (Gordon Ramsay is my favorite chef!)

I enjoy watching many foreign films/independent and also a countless amount of documentaries.

I do a lot of community service work, food drives, help setup up a community summer event where we attract over 8,000 people between 2 sites in underserved areas.

I just started learning MMA and have been sparring a bit and plan to take it further with a focus on Muay Thai kickboxing.

I created a documentary.

Wrote two articles on ethics...one is going to be published in Academic Medicine soon

Started a student organization.

Created a partnership between a village and my student organization.

Gave a TEDtalk. 🙂

Working on a checklist that will be used by students (trying not to reveal it as it would become obvious with a google search as to who I am)

Photography is also a hobby of mine.

I'll be getting back into running, swimming, and basketball in about 3 weeks (currently recovering from surgery 🙁)

I'm currently reading a "Snow Crash" by neal stephenson. Super awesome so far. Reading can be really rewarding. I like comic books too 🙄

Really missing basketball, I haven't been able to play for about 4 months now.

I like to swim and do triathlons. I also love to travel (I've studied abroad in Spain and Japan and traveled all over Europe- including Iceland).

There are 2 things that I've done that is non-medical related. First, I worked in the office for a year while waiting for my medical related job interviews and then when I got hired I left the office and started doing medical things to improve my resume for med school, then the second was when I played golf for my college (I don't recommend it because the time I became their player, I had missed a lot of work because we travel here and there for the tournaments and I didn't have much focus on my academics, so I told them that I wont be playing for a while but I'm still gonna be in the team and that I will still help them with other stuff like help the coaches and travel with them when I have free time). It was a good experience though. 🙂

Holy mango, you gave a TED Talk?!?!?! #HERO 😍

Hahahaha...

Call me insane, but I actually get her. And I support her. I think she just stated the elephant in the room, and people were bothered by it.
