After passing the screenings at Loyola and Pittsburgh recently, I was curious if this is really something to be excited about or if they only screen out a very small percentage of applicants.

Anybody know the percentages of applicants that pass secondary screenings?

I'm thinking they probably pass a high percentage of applicants since they probably want the money from many applicants
if 90% of applicants pass screenings, then it's not a big improvement in acceptance chances
I'm thinking they probably wouldn't pass this many since why bother screening in the first place?

Although, now that I passed them, I'm obviously hoping a low percentage pass screenings
if only 50% of applicants pass screenings, then obviously this improves acceptance chances
it's probably higher than this because that's a low amount of money coming in

my guess would be it's probably somewhere in the middle, may 75%?
that's just a guess though, anybody know any reliable stats

I think it really depends on the school. For example getting a secondary from UCSF or UCLA means quite a bit, while getting one from Loyola isn't that big of a deal. I remember hearing somewhere that Loyola just screens out those with less than a 3.0.

The interview is the big cut.

Yeah, from what I saw, UCSF only gives secondaries to 1/3 of its applicants. UCI is about 40-50%.. not sure about UCLA, but I'm guessing it's somewhere in that ballpark too.

I'm curious, as well...

I was wondering the same thing about VCU.......I know they gave the numbers in the original email but I seemed to have lost it. Anyone Know?

😕

And the last cut. I think a lot of it is still your numbers though. I can't imagine they just go by how they like you 😱

i just got VCU's confirmation of getting my AMCAS. They said they get "about 5000" apps and give out "about 2600" secondaries, so a little over 50%, pretty big cut if you ask me.

I believe VCU also said that 60% of the people who submit the screened secondaries get interviews.

VCU says they interview 60% of those who complete secondaries; since they have ~4400 applicants and they interview 660, this implies they only give secondaries to 25% of their applicants.

UCSF gives secondaries to about 1500/5500. I think for UCLA it's about 3000/5500 but I don't remember; it's on their web site though.

Anyway, it's going to vary by school, but they wouldn't screen pre-secondary if they wanted everyone's money.

I meant inviting for the interview is the big cut, because after that they might accept 50% or so, depending on the school of course and the number of interviews they grant.

Well I'm sure not everyone who gets invited to an interview actually goes to one, so probably more than 25% get secondaries.

Do you think maybe we're being a little paranoid about this? 🙂
