Hello! I am hoping to get someone's opinion on schools that I should consider given my application materials. I have been looking at the MSAR but am not really sure how I should craft a school list. How can you tell about a school's "culture"? I would prefer not to attend an institution with a cutthroat, competitive environment. I would also love any feedback you may have about weaknesses in my application.

Here is some pertinent info about my application. I would love any recommendations about where I should think about applying (obviously University of Washington and WSU).

  • Major: Anthropology: Global Health and Environment
  • Minor: Biology
  • cGPA and sGPA as calculated by AMCAS
    • cGPA: 3.94
    • sGPA: 3.86
  • MCAT score(s) and breakdown
    • 523 –– 130/132/129/132
  • State of residence or country of citizenship (if non-US)
    • WA
  • Ethnicity and/or race
    • Asian-American ORM
  • Undergraduate institution or category
    • WashU
  • Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer)
    • Clinic and surgical receptionist in orthopedics practice - 400 hours
    • Hospital volunteer - ~100-150 hours by application time
  • Research experience and productivity
    • 1 summer bio wetlab + poster, no pubs
    • 1 semester microbio lab, no pubs or posters
    • 1 honors thesis in medical anthropology - 2 poster presentations + thesis
  • Shadowing experience and specialties represented
    • Orthopedic surgeon (20 hours)
    • Anesthesiologist (8 hours)
    • Emergency medicine (50 hours)
    • *by time of application will have internal medicine and cardiology
  • Non-clinical volunteering
    • Tutor/mentoring organization that incorporates physical activity (100 hours)
    • Homeless shelter (200 hours)
    • Food bank (50 hours)
  • Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
    • Co-founder of pick-up soccer club on campus (3 years)
    • Director for public health student group on campus (2 years)
    • Resident Advisor for sophomores and first-year students (2 years)
    • Intramural sports (soccer, basketball, futsal, ultimate frisbee),
    • Various jobs during summers and some school semesters
  • Relevant honors or awards
    • Honors Thesis + Latin Honors
    • Undergraduate research grant
    • Dean's List all 8 semesters of college
    • Anthropology honor society
    • RA of the Year 2018-2019
  • LOR
    • Letters of rec will likely be 1 strong non-science, 1 good science and 1 mediocre science
How much networking have you done to talk with students, alumni, and admissions staff at the schools you want to attend?

I have not yet reached out to any schools other than WashU (since I am an undergraduate there) because I am just starting making my list for this upcoming cycle. If I email the admissions offices at various schools, do you think they could connect me to current med students?
Admissions officers won't have the time to be matchmakers but SNMA and AMSA chapters will.
