Hey there, how's it goin everyone. I'm going to post ALL the stuff that will be going on my application for NEXT cycle so please let me know if there is anything that I should be working on. I am going to start studying pretty hard for the MCAT this summer, take a Princeton Review MCAT course in the Fall, then plan on taking the MCAT in January. So that's all I feel like I can do at this point. Other than that, here is what will be on my application:

GPA RELATED
Graduated UCSB 2020 with biopsychology major
GPA by year: 2.37, 2.75, 3.41, 3.81
Informal post bacc at UCLA Extension (entire o chem series, microbio, 1 quarter biochem so 5 classes in total) 4.0 GPA
Cumulative GPA with post bacc: 3.30
AMCAS sGPA with post bacc: 3.0
AACOMAS sGPA with post bacc: 3.10
TMDSAS sGPA with post bacc: 3.0
Upper division major GPA: 3.97
My numbers are obviously really low, but I have a pretty solid upward trend and did really well in my upper division courses. The only upper division biology related courses I'll have are cognitive neuroscience, behavioral neuroscience, microbiology and biochemistry (1 quarter)

WORK RELATED
Will have 1,000 scribe hours at an internal medicine/sports medicine (MD) practice seeing 60 patients a day
Will have 2,000 medical assistant hours at the same practice ^^
500 yoga teacher hours at CorePower Yoga

RESEARCH RELATED
500 research hours in a vision and perception neuroscience lab
Publication in the UCSB undergraduate research journal

SHADOW RELATED
Will have 50 pain management specialist hours (DO)
Will have 50 surgery center hours (orthopedic surgeon, podiatrist, pain management ALL MD)

VOLUNTEER RELATED
50 emergency department hours 3 years ago
Will have 200 hours at a children's ministry at a local church leading small groups and other events for the little ones

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATIONS
1. MD I scribe and medical assistant under
2. Biochemistry professor
3. Research lab PI that I got publication with
4. Pain management DO that I shadow

These are the 4 letters of recommendation I will have for sure that will be very strong. I can potentially get a letter of recommendation from a statistics professor and behavioral neuroscience professor at UCSB but I don't know if there is any guarantee that they will be as strong as these four ^^

So that was very very lengthy and as of right know, I know that I need to absolutely crush the MCAT. Are there any other glaring weaknesses on my application? I wish I took more classes in my informal post bacc, but I need to make money, so I've been working like crazy and been doing what I can and don't really have enough time for classes with work schedule. I won't be taking classes this summer and Fall because I will be focusing all of my effort into MCAT studying. Should I potentially take another upper division bio class after I take the MCAT (Spring 2022)? Do I need more clinical volunteer hours? Should I start volunteering for the underserved community? Do I even have a shot at MD if I score ~510 on the MCAT? Please let me know, anything is helpful.

Why are you applying through the Texas application service?
Much will depend on your MCAT score. Do not take the test until you are consistently scoring at or above your target score on FL practice tests..
Your GPAs are too low for MD schools and awfully low for DO schools. Always have a backup plan if medicine doesn’t work out.

For MD and DO schools, you don’t think I have a chance even if I score well on my MCAT and with my upward GPA trend? Should I quit my job and do a post bacc or SMP then? I’m pretty set on medicine and know that I can do well in an actual post bacc or SMP but I need money to live right now. Honestly I just fooled around pretty hard my first two years of college until I decided to go into medicine so I don’t want to give up on that goal

For DO schools:
Average
Cumulative and Science GPA's for Osteopathic DO— AACOMAS.
Average Cumulative GPAAverage Sci GPA
All Applicants3.453.33
Matriculants3.543.45
Mar 15, 2017

for MD schools:

The average GPA for medical school matriculants in 2017–2018 was a 3.64 science, a 3.79 non-science, and a 3.71 overall.

So what do you think? You are far below the average for both. I can’t Advise you on whether a post bacc or a SMP would help you out. It’s a lot of money and there are no guarantees. You took 5 classes and did fine but I don’t think that’s enough to convince ADCOMS you are ready for the rigors of med school. Do you have a MCAT score? Maybe with a couple of years of full time upper division science classes you might be okay. But again there are no guarantees.
Each year only 42% of ALL applicants are accepted to any school. That means that close to 60% are outright rejected, including applicants with stellar applications.
Sometimes you just have to shoot your shot or find an alternate Career path. I know it’s tough but ultimately you have to decide. Good luck.

So give me a suggestion, will a solid MCAT score >515 give me a shot? Do I need a post bacc? SMP?

With a SGPA of 3.0/3.1 (MD/DO) I’m afraid that you have big knowledge gaps in the sciences that will impact your MCAT scores. I’m not sure how you think you can get >515 MCAT score but if you think you can score a 505 you might get into one of the newer DO schools. But again there are no guarantees. Heck applying to med school in general is a crap shoot with a good application.

FWIW - with the surge in applications last cycle, this number is now closer to 36%! 🙂

I recommend crushing your mcat and going for an SMP with linkage to the medical school

Oh my gosh. But it makes sense. I’ve been meaning to wish you well this cycle.
Thank you VERY much!!! 🙂

Yeah -- final numbers aren't in yet, but it looks like there were around 61,000 applicants chasing around 22,000 seats.
