Hey all.. so here is my situation:

I'm a 3rd year student, who can either graduate in the summer or graduate in the autumn, whichever quarter I choose to take classes. I will apply to D school this June. I have already taken the DAT (21/21/21) and my GPA is 3.4. What should I do from now until dental school? Also: Is my GPA going to hinder my chances for D School greatly?

a) Take summer classes and do research, graduate by summer and find a job ( and if so, what type of job with a BS in Biology?).

b) Just do research this summer, then take classes in autumn, graduate, then take a full time job.

c) Another idea that I have not been intelligent enough to think of.

ANY input would be greatly appreciated.

Also.. How do I become X-ray certified so that I can possibly work as a Dent. Asst. for a year before dent school would begin in Aug '09?

Thanks!

SM

Nah, your fine, as long as you have about 50 hours shadowing your set.
GOOD LUCK

Hi

I was in your place last year. It is a very uncertain place to be in. I had trouble figuring out what i wanted to do. What i did was took a class in the summer and took the dat. Pretty fun summer. Finished up in fall and graduated. My plan was to get some part time job at school again and just party the last semester away. I recommend you do that. Dental school is going to be rough so have some fun now. Get some job at school and then live the life. Getting a serious job with a biology degree has been difficult. Ive had one job offer and ive applied to over 200 positions. Unfortunately I still have not been accepted into dental school. Waitlist at UIC and no decision at SIUE. I interviewed with SIUE in november and they still havnt made a decision yet. Its pissin me off. So now i'm scrabbling to make a plan and retake the DAT. Im planning on reapplying and retaking the dat. But you seem to have some solid stats so you should get in if you apply early. I also thought that so dont make the same mistake i did.

You GPA isn't going to hold you back with DAT scores like that. Apply to any school you want and you've got a decent shot getting in. If you can graduate this summer it would make doing interviews this fall much easier. So I'd go for that option. As for a job, I'm sure there's some opportunities out there, but if you can't find anything than register with a science based staffing agency. I worked through one for a few months after graduation called K-Force. It might be nationwide. They placed me as basically a lab tech at a municipal sanitation treatment facility. It was about $15/hour, not great but not bad for no experience. It was kind of odd too, b/c when I started there were 10 other new-hires and they all just graduated too from the same school in either bio or chem.

i say just do whatever you are most interested in.

right now i am just working as a full time assistant and trying to learn as much as i can before dental school.
