I am bipolar and had some problems with school when I was first diagnosed with it. Should I put this in my school application. I don't know if this will make me look bad or not.

Does it ask for your medical history? Yeah probably put it

or... more likely

if it asks

Do you have a medical condition that could cause you problems in pharmacy school?

You don't expect it to cause you any problem so why would you put it?

Plenty of people are bipolar and have very few problems assuming they manage the condition.

I don't see any reason to put it in there unless you think it's something you can turn into a positive (stronger person etc. )

Did that make sense?

I'm assuming "when I was first diagnosed with it I had some school problems" was at least 10 years ago and didn't involve burning down the building and or attacking the janitor with a shoe horn or something.

If it was just a grade/general behavior thing I wouldn't stress over it assuming it wasn't week before last or something.

Use caution with what you put in your application. Stating that you had a diagnosed medical condition to explain a semester of bad grades is perfectly acceptable. There is no need to state 'bipolar' as the reason for this.

The only reason you should divulge such personal information (info that should not have a negative connotation, but probably does) would be if you truly wanted the admissions committee to know you have bipolar. I think it is a very bad idea to convey that info in an essay or application. There of course is the proper time and place - but an app just isnt one of 'em.

My sis is bipolar, she's a teenager though and she has suffered a lot in school for it. I would say don't put it. I think it's a good idea to put health, instead of specifying.

I been thinking about the same thing lately.

Would Pharmacy schools be bias against applicants who are diagnosed with bipolar or any other mental illnesses?

In my opinion, If I were you, I would call pharmacy schools and ask if your specific condition would be a problem for them.

Seriously though, don't put it in. People are inherently bias, and most likely than not, it will work against you.

definitely not.

bipolar disorder has negative social connotations. simply be general.

Thanks for all your response. The schools don't ask to look at our medical history (that I know of). I will just put down that I was diagnosed with a medical problem.

It is up to you. However, keep in mind that when applying for your intern license or, if your state doesn't license interns, pharmacist license, you will very likely have to disclose bipolar disorder. I don't remember the specific verbage around the medical conditions the applications have...

If you think it has affected your schooling then mention it, it could help you explain your grades better
