I'm a currently ending my sophomore year. I'm transferring to a well-known state university in the Fall, and now I have all summer to look forward to. I don't really have a lot on my resume since I was a community college student the last two years. Last summer I took classes.

Current ECs🙁low)
-Volunteer as a first aid responder ~1 year
-Tutor for ~1.5 years.
-Volunteered for local church for ~1.5 years
Really just looking to get some better or more quality clinical exposure or even something to be productive during the summer..

What can I do this summer to gain valuable experiences? I was planning on internship, and maybe cold-calling a few companies nearby to see if they'd like to have a student intern i.e. medical offices, hospitals, etc, good idea?

If all else, I'd probably just end up taking classes during the summer and working. Not ideal, but still something to do..

I tried to volunteer in a variety of different settings and hospitals. It was actually pretty interesting seeing how my patient populations would change over the course of the week. Get a lot of variety, and fun times.

Find something you are interested in and volunteer for something involving that:
I would suggest volunteering for the following or something similar:
1. Art aide at your local Art museum
2. Tour guide at your local tour place if you live in a tourist area
3. Animal Shelter
4. Women's abuse center
5. Local homeless shelter
6. Blood donation truck volunteer
7. Blood Bank volunteer
8. Soup kitchen for your local homeless
9. Animal Rescue center (go out and find stray dogs and cats and bring them in
10. Scribe
11. Local ER
12. Local Firefighter (volunteer)
13. Runner for local hospital surgery or trauma center
14. Do a 2 week international medical mission trip through your school, church or local hospital
15. Do a summer MCAT prep program like at UMDNJ etc..
16. Volunteer to go to the grocery store for your elderly community members, get their medicine, help them around the house, etc..
17. Lead a dance class or become a summer instructor at your local ymca or recreational center doing swimming or ball room dancing, gymnastics, basketball, etc.. whatever you are good at doing..

Hopefully there is something on this list you may like, or that may inspire you to choose something in one direction or another.. Good Luck this summer 🙂

Will it look bad if I took a full time job and only took a light load of courses?
I'm planning on only taking ~10 credits, working full time, shadowing, and tutoring.
15 credits is full time.

Scribe job, research internship, begin to look into MCAT study.

Just transferred from CC to an instate school, and those above are what I am doing over summer, as well as an additional non-clinical job.

I had fairly good success emailing professors and doctors around my area to find research opportunities.

Shadowing and volunteering are also good choices.

1. Shadow
2. Volunteer (Doesn't necessarily need to be in a hospital, but that would be good)
3. Watch The Great Gatsby if you haven't already.
4. Do some summer research (for next year since it's too late to apply now).
