What should I do with myself!?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The best thing to do now would be to allocate enough time to study for the DAT. The other parts of your application (EC's) you seem to have under control. Your GPA is competitive but your Science GPA is on the low side. Maybe take some science classes at a University to boost that and show adcoms that you can still handle upper level science classes.

I think the most important thing is your DAT. If you do really well it could help your application alot. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply!

I think what's dragging down my science GPA the most is a string of B's in my senior semester, and two C's in Ochem.

Do you suggest any upper level bio classes? Maybe something like a physiology course or something?

I figure that my science GPA can get up to a 3.3 with a full semester of science classes (getting all A's of course).

So, you think this would be a good thing to do?

Thanks for your help, bhind! I think I'll take your advice and register for spring semester!

Any other suggestions are welcome too!

yes, if you are flexible and are able to take more courses (esp. upper division biology courses) that would be a really good idea.
remember, each dental school requires different amount of pre-req courses. if you want to apply to lot of schools, make sure you have lot of upper div. biology/science courses (micro, biochem, anatomy, physiology, histology, etc. are ones you should have under your belt)

good luck and ace on DAT

Do you think my sGPA will hang me up a lot in getting into a school?

It wont hang you but with the trend of GPA's going in the upward direction and the competition that exists in the application pool ... it behooves you to do anything and everything to bring up your sGPA before you submit your application. I mean it really can't hurt. Since you said you have free time ( or thats what im gathering from your post) I think the best thing you can do is taking 10 units or so of upper level science courses. Once you finish your DAT[destroyer, topscore, achiever, kaplanBB] then spend time filling it in with research.

Once you submit your application in EARLY JUNE send in all your secondary applications and fees ASAP then wait to hear from schools. Applying to dental schools takes a long time. Schools usually take their time reviewing applications. So what to do after you submit its really up to you. Fill that time with research. Maybe get a regular job. I wouldn't take any more classes because schools wont consider those grades (unless they ask for them because they are trying to determine between you and another applicant... this is an extreme example)

To directly answer your question about your sGPA. Yes it can... but if you do really well on the DAT science sections (21+ on each section) then it can MAYBE make up for your low sGPA but I wouldn't bank on it personally. Do everything you can right now. 1 semester of grades in Spring could bring your sGPA up a little. How much it goes up is on you. Ideally you want your grades and test scores as high as possible.
