I have received an opporitunity for grad school in pharmacology and I'm thinking I should pursue it and then go to medical school. The grad school offers a tuition waiver and ample money to live and the city is great. I could finish a Ph.D in a medically relevant field and then pursue medical school and complete a neurology residency ( I know Columbia offers a 3 year M.D. for doctorate holders).

I have extensive research and was interested in being a clinician who practices medicine and conducts research.

What do you think?

well, it seems like you already know the answer. don't pass up an opportunity like a free PhD!!

What about non-science Ph.Ds?

Still, often are funded. Many will give a stipend in addition to funding your tuition. You're doing research and usually also expected to be a TA. It's not "free," you're just paying for it with your time and not with money.

Why get an MD after getting a phd in pharmacology? Why not get a pharmD? Just seems like something that might come up in MD interviews.

how competitive are you for MSTP and/or the research powerhouse MD programs? how happy would you be with just this PhD if MD doesn't work out? I ask the second one because I've seen more than a few times that grad school is not a good way to increase your impressiveness for med school

I'm not interested in being a practicing pharmacist. I want to be a clinical scientist who practices medicine. I know people in pharmacy school and it doesn't interest me while pharmacology/pharmacodynamics does.

In terms of research, I'm competitive but my GPA leaves much to be desired. If the PhD was terminal, I'd be more than satisfied.

Sorry I can't give any advice for your situation but I just love your profile pic 🙂 -I could eat a knob at night.
