I received a letter yesterday informing me that my application was selected among those in the very competitive category and a decision regarding acceptance or placement on an alternate list would be made shortly. I interviewed almost 2 months ago. I really liked this school and I would say that post interview it left me with one of the best impressions all around. My question is, should I wait to see what decision is made, I believe it is between acceptance and waitlist or should I sent a letter ASAP expressing my interest in the school. The letter closed with "Please do not hesitate to call me if I can be of further assistance" so I don't think that communication before a decision will be bad etiquette. What do you think? Thanks

I do not think it would be bad for you to send the letter before you hear of the descision, however, I do not think that it will actually make at difference at this time. If you are waitlisted though, the letter will go in your file and they are more likely to select you over another applicant because you have shown more interest in their school. Hope this helps. Hope you get an acceptance soon. 😀 👍

sure, write a letter saying something to the effect of:

Dear XXX,

I appreciate your review of my application, which was submitted on XXX. I respect your decision regarding either acceptance or placement on an alternate list. I want to take this opportunity to emphasize that XXXX is still my first choice for a medical school education.

My enthusiasm for XXXX is based on that it emphasizes XXXX with cutting edge courses and many research opportunities. For reasons X,Y and Z, I feel that this would be an ideal opportunity for me.

I believe that my application already indicates that I have challenged myself in college by X,Y and Z. Furthermore, I was able to handle the academic workload while contributing to my school and community through various extracurricular and service activities. I particularly enjoyed doing xxx and hope to be able to contribute in similar community service activities or research while in medical school.

I just wanted to formally communicate to you that if accepted at XXX I would definitely matriculate there.

The first thing you should do is to stop rubbing it in...
Just kidding.
Yeah, go ahead and send a letter. :luck:

Thanks drsungoddess. You're probably right. But why send a letter telling me that you are in the process of making a decision so late after the interview? I would understand if I got this letter a month ago. I'm confused, but I've noticed that this is not a foreign state for me while going through this process 😳

I'm not rubbing it in. There is nothing to rub in at this point. If anything I wish to rub any good luck (trust me when I say I have luck on my side) I have on anyone else who needs it. 😉

I don't understand why they send the letter at all. At eight weeks post interview, I would assume that any letter that I receive from a school contains the committee's decision. What they have sent you is a cruel teaser letter.

I can just imagine trembling as I open the letter and begin to read. Then, after reading "we will be making a decision shortly," I scream "WTF!?!" Is this some kind of twisted game?

i sort of agree and therefore it seems to me that the purpose of the letter is to get some reaction from the receipient and perhaps that could sway the admissions committee to decide which pile to move the application to....does he really want to go to that school or not?

That is exactly how I was feeling. I came home to a small, thin white envelope and assumed it was a rejection. When I opened it I was relieved it wasn't a rejection but annoyed it wasn't a decision. But I know i shouldn't complain, so I wont.

I think you're right. It makes logical sence. Why else would they send the letter, I don't think it is a common practise (anyone correct me if I'm wrong). I'm going to send a letter, it could only help right?. Thanks guys.
