Hey, I'm ordering a new computer this Tomorrow or Wed, and I was wondering if certain programs like Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint are absolutely necessary for med school. Microsoft office is an expensive option to add these on so I don't wanna unnecessarily spend money on this. Do you ever have to do presentations at all during the first two years?

Or do you guys have any other recommendations for software or hardware i should include in my order?

Thanks.

It depends on your school. Are all your lectures in PowerPoint format that can download? If that is the case I would get powerpoint. You have to have some type of word processing program (Word), I also use excel a lot.

As a side, if you are getting a laptop or are planning on spending a lot of time studying from your computer I would recommend getting a medical dictionary software. I use my Stedman's Dictionary on my computer constantly. I am not sure how much it costs though, since we were given computers with the software already on them.

thanks, i found a university discount and i'll be able to get this software much cheaper.

I agree with the above that powerpoint is pretty important because of downloading lectures. Excel is also pretty useful, though not necessary because a lot of people like to make spread sheets for anatomy and stuff. My school has a list serve so if one person makes a spread sheet they can send it out to everyone else. If I didn't have excel I couldn't get those. Outside of that it would depend on if the school you go to has specific requirements. Most don't but I think a few do. I waited to buy my computer until I knew where I was going.

U can also use Microsoft Access if u want to make a database of all the people and their phone numbers in the class. And then use some visual basic and SQL to make some queries and search functions so u can find their names and phone numbers in a hurry 🙄

I use Access much more than silly programs like powerpoint and Word.

openoffice.org - $0

Also, you can download viewers for Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel if you simply wish to view the files (from www.microsoft.com/office )
