Many of my mentors are telling me to do lots of research (doesn't matter if its a specific specialty) and pump out publications to have a shot at more competitive speciality programs. What do you think about this advice, and what specialties are generally able to pump out a bunch of clinical research abstracts/posters/papers quickly?
This is impossible to answer. It really depends upon the authors and what they're studying.

Advice about what? You don't need it to get into medical school, and impact carries some weight. You can't always control when your paper gets accepted either. I think mentoring and your dean's letters are more consequential as would your board scores.

Medical genetics/bioinformatics/computational biology, but there's already major talk about adjusting impact factor due to this. I don't view this as even a factor for acceptance. Your numbers (USMLE, GPA) matter far more and are in your control.

I personally think the "easiest" is to do a bunch of meta-analyses, but it's not that useful. But, I'm curious about the source of that advice as for Radiology/Lab Medicine/Pathology which is historically a research heavy specialty, that wouldn't enter ACP's RPD's minds besides making sure they did do some research.
