Just took the MCAT, and have to wait the month or so to get the grade. So i thought I would volunteer at a hospital, hopefully in the ER sector, and pick up a job. Question is what did you guys do after you finished the MCAT for jobs?

I want to make some money again, but i feel kinda silly to be working at a sales job or something easy like that for a couple months only and not even related to the medical field... what did you guys do for money?

I kept working the 2 jobs I had during MCAT crunch time and added in a cool internship where I got to see surgeries!

Scribe in an ER - dropped this to 2/wk during MCAT crunch time.
Biotech company - awesome coworkers, pays the bills
UC Davis premedical internship - look into it, it was awesome!

I'll look into the scribe position, but the UC Davis is about 7 hours way from me... no bueno

Yeah, several of the people in my cycle were from LA...or farther!

Dang, woman! Those sound awesome. What did the internship entail?
At least once/wk I would page whichever surgical service I was assigned to, ask the resident where to meet/when AM rounds were (depending on which shift I was on), and then stick with someone from the team throughout the day. That means any/everything from rounds, charting-room, clinic hours, research events, OR time, consults, ER pages, M&M, Grand Rounds, surgery school, you name it. Services included ENT, plastics, neuro, CT, transplant, ICU, trauma, vascular, burn, GI, urology, etc.
There were also meetings every other week where we'd usually hear a guest speaker or do a hands-on workshop...we heard from admissions people, did practice MMIs, learned the basics of suturing, had a CT surgeon walk us through dissecting pig hearts, heard a talk on healthcare politics, heard from the dean of the med school, all sorts of things!

It was pretty sick...the people who relocated for the semester rented a place, picked up a side job for expenses, and did up to 5 shifts/wk!

That is soooo dope... Look at all us jealous pre-meds :cat:

EDIT: Jk, just realized the guy that asked about it is a med student, just me that's a jealous pre-med I guess 😀

The more relevant point is that there are cool opportunities no matter where you're at, if you're willing to invest the research to find them and the effort to make the logistics/location/schedule work out!

Sounds like you got an insider's look. What a neat opportunity for pre-meds! Seems like that kind of experience would be motivational, and help you to keep your eye on the prize.
