They say that successful people get up early and consistently. As a dental student or pre-dent, what time do you get up?

I work at 7:30AM some days and 1:30PM some days. I'll be up at 6:00AM on the days I work early and 7:15AM every other day including weekends so that I can get done as much as humanly possible in one day. I also go to bed by 10:30PM because I feel that nothing productive gets done after 10PM and I am wasting energy for the next day.

I also work only 6 hour days as an RDA so I have lots of free time to hit the gym, play my drums, and prepare everything I need to take care of for church Sundays since I hold multiple leadership roles there.

Im curious as to what time you dental students get up.

In college, I got up at about 11 on average, witch is unfortunate because I had classes at 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30 most semesters. I'm not a note taker, so I would just catch up with the lecture notes around test time and be good.

Out of school for a few months and I weirdly wake up at around 7-9, I don't have work early in the morning or anything, I just still naturally wake up that early. It's pretty weird

I work well at night (well at least until 12 am max). I usually get up around 8 AM unless I have class/lab early. The important thing is to get 7-8 hours of sleep.

Edit: By the way, getting up at 7 AM to get "as much done as possible" doesn't make sense if you sleep at 10:30PM. You get the same work done as if you were to sleep at 12 AM and wake up at 8:30 AM.

I think its not what time your up, but how long you're up and what you do... I wake up at 7:15 am during the week, and 8:30 am on weekends.

Currently in my last semester. I typically have been sleeping around 12-1 AM and waking up around 8 or 9. I tend not to attend most of my classes either unless they require attendance, I prefer just reading the textbook or memorizing powerpoints, lectures are typically useless for me

Depends on the day. usually ranges from about 4am (work at 5am on sundays) - about 9am.. average about 6-8 hours of sleep a night

I wish I could just sit down and study, or take good quality notes, it's just not my style at all haha, I've tried to do it and it just doesn't work.

Everyone's different, but every road can get you where you need to go. I was one helping my gf study for a test of hers and she showed me her notes, for one test she madea review of like 7-8 pages filled top to bottom and I was in shock. That's impressive to me honestly, I feel like you never miss details if you go that in depth.

What's your study style?

For like 90% of college I would wake up at 5:30am and work out at 6am. This was when I was doing research, 18hrs of classes, and clubs and stuff. There was just no other time I could get a workout in because I would just make excuses/things would come up. This semester I've got less on my plate so I wake up around 8:30am and get to class around 9-10am depending on the day.

1.Print out ppt
2.Skim textbook while loosely writing notes on top of ppt when I think something is important
3. In class: write notes on top of ppt while prof is lecturing
4. Review ppt after 24 hours
5. Do the problems in the back of the book
6. Study ppt slides before exams 1-3 days before the exam...

Steps 2 doesn't always work out for me due to time... Also, 4 and 5 can occur simultaneously depending on the class since each class requires a little tailoring to the fit the professors teaching style.

I don't make good quality notes either like a lot of my classmates which are nice, pretty, and carries every minute detail.... My focus is how fast can I learn this information and retain it long term.

Sounds like a very involved process that may be difficult to maintain in D school. Unless I'm overestimating the time you spend doing these things haha

I get up every day at 5 am. I like to make my bed (two types of people in this world: those who make their bed, and those who don't), eat breakfast, and read the news. I either get to work by 7 am or study until class starts.

Saturdays and Sundays I sleep in until 7 am.

Most nights I get like 6.5 hours of sleep. I run and lift right after class usually, but I'm thinking about doing that before class in dental school.

I have been treating school like a full time job. I am always at school at least 8-5. If I don't have class until later, I just study and work on assignments early. I like to go to the gym around 530 and then study after for a few hours. There are days when I am at school from 8 AM to after 10 PM. Just depends on my needs, but I am almost always there at 8 AM.

Well it seems as though all of us predents and dents go to the gym/workout in some form. hmmmmmmmmm

This however is a sweeping assumption from a thread of about 8 people

Lately I've been getting up at 4 to get to the gym by 4:30. I'm trying to make the most out of my last few months before dental school. I don't want to sacrifice time that I could be hanging out with my wife/daughter so I get up early. I agree with what people say. If I get 6 hours of sleep I'm good. Anything less and it's a struggle.

The Mayo Clinic summarizes this well - exercise helps you feel happier and more energetic. It also helps you sleep better among other benefits.

People who go to dental school or are hoping to get in function well because they have to balance all sorts of life activities, and I think exercise really helps that balancing act.

I generally need 6 as well but i can do 4 or 5 sporadically when needed but a couple 5s in a row and I can not focus at all.

All can be fixed with a couple of energy drinks though haha:soexcited:

lol I am not a big energy drink guy and I do not like coffee but I am sure I will end up being a big fan of one of the two or both by the end of dental school!

Damn you're on that Dwayne Johnson grind. I respect that.

4:00am every morning. Get my workout in and done by 5:30 then have 2hrs of solid work before class.

I get the mot work done early in the morning plus i have never needed much sleep. Works for me. 5hr of sleep and I am good to go.

You guys are crazy...in a good way. I would never have the willpower to force myself to get up that early on a regular basis, wish I did though

As a D2 I typically go to bed at 12:45 am and wake up at 5:45 am.....

Pre-dent here, I work part-time at a firm, 8am-12 pm, (Mon-Thurs), my classes are all in the afternoon/evenings from 5 pm onwards, till 10 pm. I have my science classes on Fridays. I go to the gym 5-6 times a week (usually between 12 pm - 4 pm (it varies) and on the weekend I usually have my yoga class, dance class, zumba class, and basically just catching up on the week and studying. I try to sleep by 12 am (it usually ends up later) and usually wake up on weekdays by 6:45/7 am. Weekends I sleep in to "Catch up on all of my sleep".

I wish we didn't have to sleep. Think about all of the stuff we could be doing instead...

There is two types of people in this world, those who have had that thought and those who have not.

I've spent time thinking about this but honestly we would probably just be expected to do more in a day. Same thing happened with increased productivity from the increase in use of computers in the workplace. Instead of "making life easier" with more time to relax, they just gave everyone more stuff to do! Pretty lame.

Oh yeah definitely. I like to think of it as what I would do if I had that extra time, but it's kind of pointless to imagine.

Yeah I guess some people love their sleep...

Do people really love sleep? Ive always thought about that and ive come to the conclusion that people don't love sleep, they just hate the sensation of waking up. amirite?

agreed. And the absolute worst feeling is not being able to sleep when the mind's racing. However if you pull an allnighter or have little sleep the day before, nothing feels better than going to bed

I guess it would be hard to love sleep itself, since you're not very conscious while actually doing it. But people love resting and taking it easy for sure. You're definitely right about people hating waking up though.

I don't mind waking up personally. I like the feeling of a new day, and I definitely love breakfast.

Wake up at 8:00. School from 9:30-5 ish. Some days I volunteer real late. Workout 9:00-10:00pm-ish. Bed by 1 AM
But the senioritis is strong.
I want to change my workout to 6:00-7:00 PM in D school and be in bed by 11:00 and up no later than 6....Will that happen? Probably not:shrug:

considering that I sleep every night at 4.30 am or 5 am. If left to my own devices I would wake up at 2 pm, but because of school, I wake up at 9 am or 10 am.
