I was looking through my transcript and noted that I received a NC (no credit) grade for my first attempt at Calculus 1. I am aware that I failed this class and initially received a D-, which I retook for a B+.

At my university, certain lower-division courses (like Calc 1) are assigned a NC grade if the original grade does not meet the minimum requirement (in this case a C-). The university does this because a NC is not factored into the university GPA.

BUT, I know that AMCAS looks at every grade and according to the table below directly from AAMC, a NC grade is viewed the same as an F grade (seen in the F column).

So my question is if I should petition to have the NC changed back to a D- on my transcript to improve my AMCAS GPA slightly, or leave it as a NC.

@gonnif and @Catalystik , I believe you two have a lot of wisdom in this area? If you two and any others have the time, please share any advice you may have.

Thanks for taking the time to read this 🙂

It seems like a lot of time to petition the grade being changed back to a D-. I would just report it as is on your transcript. Adcoms will see your retake and improvement anyways.

Assuming 120 credit hours to graduate and 4 credit hours for this course, getting that grade changed would raise your AMCAS GPA by 0.02. If that's the difference between acceptance and rejection, you've got much bigger problems in your app. Forget this nonsense and dedicate your energies to your current courses and ECs. What you're doing now is elevating neuroticism to an art form.

@gonnif, I think you're off by one order of magnitude. Should be 0.031.

Wait why is NC an F???? There's a class I'm taking where a passing grade (credit) is 85% and anything below is no credit.

In terms of AMCAS, pass/fail courses generally dosen't affect your GPA. In my case, I'm on an A-F letter grade system where receiving a C- or worse gives a NC rather than a D or F for particular courses. You can find more on this on the AAMC website

Petition because if you don't get accepted you will always regret not changing the grade. The difference between 3.88 and 3.90 is just 0.02 but the round number looks so much better.
