Hey guys,

I know there are many threads about what you can do during a gap year to improve your application, and I have read most of them and will take steps to improve my application if I do not get accepted.

I am currently on several wait lists, though I am not confident about my chances of acceptance. I have a reasonable application (34, 3.8, T15 school, moderate to strong ECs), but my application was sent out late due to some factors outside of my control.

My question is this: Disregarding improving my application, are there any reasonably good, moderately high paying jobs I would be able to get? Sorry for my ignorance, I never thought I would be job searching, and know almost nothing outside of the pre-med track and finance jobs, which I would not want to do and which I don't qualify for.

Thanks in advance for any helpful direction

It would be worthwhile to look into a job in biotech. There are a number of companies that might be willing to hire an ambitious young applicant on a temp or temp-to-hire basis. If you have research contacts at your university, they should be able to help point you in the right direction. You could also look into a temp agency.

Every once in a blue moon, you'll find a great listing on Craigslist or Monster. Doesn't hurt to check and see if there's something appealing under the biotech/science section.

TBH - a bio degree isn't terribly valuable in today's market, but your research experience should help you land an entry-level job somewhere. Lots of startups out there that could use someone who has a degree, some experience, and is willing to work for around minimum wage.

Agree with the above post. Look for a job in industrial research as they are generally more lucrative than academics. The job title you're generally looking for is research tech/assistant/associate. The most important thing I've done this year for myself was get a good paying job and saving up a lot of money.
