what to do w/ multiple acceptances?

forgive me for being uninformed here, but what are you supposed to do when you receive multiple acceptances? Are you only supposed to decide (within the 10 days - 2 weeks that they give you) and withdraw from all except one (right now)? Because before, I was under the impression that we wouldn't have to decide until May, but I just wanted to make sure whether or not it's okay for me to send in the deposit/intent to register to both schools that have accepted me (since I haven't yet been able to decide between the two, and their given deadline is fast approaching).

Give one to me.

The school will give you about 1 month to give them a hefty deposit... and then 2 weeks after that, another deposit. So you can't reallyk wait til the last minute and decide unless you wanna lose out on the $$$. I just want 1 damn acceptance, please!!

ok so here it is...
we apply to many schools and it is quite possible that we get multiple acceptances during the course of the year.

now if you want to hold their acceptance you send in the money so that they can hold a spot for you.

if you get accepted to two schools that you arent sure which one you want to go to... then pay the deposit for both schools and hold both acceptances. its a good thing to do esp. if you like both schools and cant decide yet....and you can wait for their financial aid packages to see which one is more beneficial for you...

the thing is you have to decide by may 15th. and then if this applies...the other schools you decide not to go to...you withdraw from them and then they give you back you your deposit (if that is their policy) and then with the spot that just opened up they take people off the waitlist.

so yes. if you want to hold multiple schools. just send them the money before the 2 weeks are up.

what if may 15th rolls around, and you are still waitlisted at your top choice dream school and hold a couple acceptances from schools that you aren't as excited about.

if you nail this one, i'll give you some progressively harder scenarios. heheh.

oh ho ho... a challenge.... well then lets see....

well then first make a decision between the two acceptances you have....then you can at least guarantee you will go somewhere by picking a school and then wait until the last possible moment to see if your top school will take you off the waitlist by constantly calling to see where you are and questions about how many students they historically move every year....

if there is no shot.... start finding living arrangements at your new place....or if you do have a shot....you have to do double prep....for the waitlist school AND the school you are accepted to...

ahhhh, so even if you pick one of the two schools on may 15th, you can still wait around for the waitlisted school, and ditch the other one if your dream school takes you off the waitlist? i didn't know you could do that.

that's sorta like dumping your girlfriend as soon as a better one comes along, no? i just love the parallels between girls and med schools.

yeah i do believe you can do that. at least i know thats what my friend did last year. so i know that it can be done.

expanding on those parallels between girls and med schools....

so the primary app is sorta like first striking up a conversation with a girl.

if the girl likes what she sees, then she might give you the secondary application (her phone number). some girls give them out to everybody. other girls only give it out to a select few. some will judge you only by looks (gpa and mcat) and others are also interested in your personality (amcas activities and personal statement). some girls aren't totally sold and will have to think about it some more before deciding to give you their number (pre-secondary hold).

once you get the secondary app it's sorta up to you to follow through. you can either submit the secondary (call her) or decide that your initial decision to submit the primary app (strike up a conversation with her) was a bad one, you're not really that interested, and that submitting the secondary (calling her) is not worth the application fee (night time minutes or long distance charges on your cell phone).

if you do decide to submit the secondary (call her), then the next step is to hope for an interview (hot date). of course, she might decide that after talking to you on the phone that she's not really that into you (post-secondary rejection). or she might just want to take things slowly with you since she's talking to a few other more interesting and studlier guys (post-secondary hold).

once you get that interview (hot date) though, it's time for you to work that charm. if she's feeling you then you'll probably get a second date. you might however do something to really piss her off, in which case she won't ever wanna see you again (post-interview rejection). she might also tell you that she needs more time, and that she wants to take things slowly (waitlisted!!!!)

Just remember after May 15th you can drop that school, but you won't get your deposit back. AND you can only hold one acceptance at a time after that point.

Also the parallel is great and works wonders for men/boys too. 😛

if you "pull out" before then you usually avoid the trouble of losing your hard earned money.
but i think its a reasonable price to pay to hold onto a school after the 15th and see if your waitlisted school gives you some love.

This is not true for all schools. Some do not give your money back , period

You are right. Each school technically could have a different policy and the 15th of may for refundable deposit is just a 'suggested rule' by the AAMC. I would say about 90% of the schools follow the suggested rules..in regards to accepting at least the expected number of entering class by the 15th of March and making deposits refundable until May 15th. I would definitely suggest checking each schools' policy just to make sure.....
