It seems a lot of schools say something like...

"LOR requirement: 3 letters from people who know you well, including at least one science prof..."

But they don't state 3 is the maximum, or if this is just their requirement, and you're free to include more. What is usually the case?

Another popular thing seems to be...

"LOR requirement: 3 letters from people who know you well, including at least one science prof...we encourage you to submit letters from research PIs".

Does this mean they'd like to see the PI letter IN ADDITION to the 3, or as part of the 3?

Yes, I know I am likely overanalyzing, and that I can call all of the schools to find this out (which I'll do anyway), but just curious.

You can add another couple of letters (unless they say there's a maximum as some schools do). But don't just add letters for the sake of it; add them only if they add something substantial to your app.
