So in freshman year, I got a No Pass in 2nd semester of calc. I know the best way to remedy this is to retake the class for a better grade, but I am scared to do that as I know I am very weak in the second semester of calculus and am not very confident that I can get a good grade for this class.

There is a 2nd semester of calc offered from the math dept that is know to be reputably easier, but it's a different math series and will not work for the grade replacement. I don't know if getting a better grade in this class will tell adcoms anything about the NP I got in the other class. However, I feel that the advantage of this is that I get that 2nd semester of calc done with a better grade.

What should I do? I know the best way to resolve this is to retake the harder math series and get an A, but I know my abilities for math only go up to a certain point.

Advice please? Thank you.

Do a lot of schools do grade replacement? Because what if I get a C in the class following the NP? Then if the school doesn't do grade replacement then wouldn't my GPA be even worse overall?

So at your school, a NP is a Fail in a Pass/Fail class?

On AMCAS, a fail in a pass/fail class doesn't count against your GPA. It will show up separately as a failed course taken Pass/Fail. AMCAS doesn't do grade replacement either though. If you're planning on applying DO via AACOMAS, the course content has to be demonstrably similar to use the grade replacement, and I doubt they'd accept the 2nd semester grade in replacement of a 1st semester version of a class

Yeah an NP counts as a fail in a pass/fail system. The easier class that I talked about in my first post has very similar content and so would likely count as a grade replacement for DO schools since both cover 2nd semester calculus.

Im definitely relieved after this though. I'll probably take the easier class over this summer. Thanks for the info!

You may want to double check in the AMCAS PDF booklet. I thought that they can't help you, but an F can hurt you.. But sector9 is probably right.

Super bumping due to another discovery I found.
I heard from someone that the second class has to have the same number of units, which for some ungodly reason is 3 units for the easier 2nd semester calculus class where as the one where I got the NP in is 4 units. I'm guessing that won't count for the D.O. replacement then?

Yeah, they do have to be the same number of credits...however it doesn't have to be from the same university, so if you can find an equivalent class at another school worth 4 credits, I would take that.

I got a no-pass in a pass/no-pass course and just retook it pass/no-pass and actually passed. It helps that my school includes a little blurb about how our pass/no-pass classes are no-pass at 75%. You know, some schools have a pass/no-pass/A system? Dang, that would have been nice. There's at least two classes I took pass/no-pass that I know I got an A in!

But I guess it's not recommended that I take it at a CC? It's my cheapest and closest option...
