hey, for your senior users in this forum (meaning the ones in med school, post, practicing, etc.), i am retaking my mcat this coming spring, and will be applying a second time around next cycle. i will be finishing up with grad school and will have at least one year off (meaning, if i dont get in my second time) and will be working. i am applying for research assistant jobs at local university medical centers (in chicago) since i am very interested in improving my application. however, i was recently approached by recruiters from Ernst and Young's healthcare consulting practice to work as an advisory associate next year when i graduate. my question, which would look better?...being a consultant, i would be traveling pretty regularly and be extremely busy in the application cycle, however my earning potential would be huge (i am in heavy debt from undergrad) but a research assistant is more aligned with med school. what do you guys think (assuming i did land jobs in both)?

my goal is medical school, i dont want to be a consultant, but if its a good opportunity for a year, should i take it?

go for it. The income generated will be good, and the extra year of seasoning will make you more attractive as a candidate.
+1

thanks for your input guys!

The healthcare consulting role will give you some unique experience that will help you better understand healthcare in general and should enhance your application. The job will also allow you to make some clinical contacts that would be useful for shadowing, recommendations, etc.

i have 2 DO letters (im looking to apply to DO schools only), but i think that it should give me a better perspective of the healthcare field than most undergrads going straight into med school have. not that its better, but i think that adcom's will see that i have experienced other fields and for me..medicine is what i want to do.
