What to study before semester?

Microbiology, certainly. At risk of bluntness, if someone can't keep up with introductory undergrad courses, they really have no place in any graduate program. Micro is usually an upper-level, so a little advance study might not hurt there. Good luck!

Micro would be good. I also think chemistry has a lot of little things you could learn before the semester starts (conversions, stoicheometry, etc) that would give you a good head start.
