Let's say there is a PP group with 3 guys who are partners. Looking for a 4th one so they can have post call day off after beeper call. They are only looking for an employee with a fixed salary. Let's say partners make X amount of money. How much of X would you consider to take the job. Can be from less than X to higher than X.

Wait!-Why higher?
Basically you are working the same with no job security. If Obama care turns out to be really bad you know you are gone. Plus, you have 3 people "bossing" who you don't want to piss off. There has to be some compensation for that in my book.

If there is no road to partnership, then forget it!

we say forget it.. but there are plenty of people who would take that job in a heartbeat LOL

If its a part-time gig which it probably isn't since you want 4 in the call pool, then there are many who would take it. But I don't see any reason to think this would be a good gig.

Agreed. Why would you take such a job? No call? I bet that would change quickly.

one word........RUN

Who would join this group?

Well established 15 or so partners, all types of cases
Partners make 425-450 + 9 weeks of vacation, call is q4

Partnership track is 2 yrs at 200k/year and you get 6 weeks of vacation, supposedly everything else is equal...of course no guarantee to make partner but they have a "good track record of hiring people"

too much call

need 550k for that much call. Not sustainable

"CAll" has different meanings. Is it call from home? In-house call? When does the call start? How many hours in the hospital continuously? Post call day off guaranteed? If so, when does post call begin? How about the intensity of the call? Are you up all night? Does it involve trauma, OB, Hearts and Heads?

I agree that call intensity is probably a bigger factor than frequency, but Q4, no matter how quiet, has to make it difficult for people to schedule vacations (meaning, if staffing is so tight so as to require q4...)

The call is from home but you are called in frequently. I guess my question is more related to "how fair is it to get a salary of 200k when the partners are all making $400+.

The thing to keep in mind is that assuming you spend your career with the same group in a stable setting, the more "unfair" the partnership track, the better, within reason. You only spend 2 (or 3 or whatever years) on the short end of the stick but have your salary padded on the long end of the stick for the rest of your career.

Of course, those assumptions might not come true, but I think the unfairness of a partnership track is much overplayed.
