Ok. I have a spot in a summer internship that starts next Monday but I also had an interview from a job I applied to a few weeks ago. The job is a on campus job at a luxury apartment complex for students. I basically work 20hrs/wk and get a free fully funished apartment (including flatscreen, wash/dryer,laptop and cable) including compensation. The job is oncampus which is great but they want me to start next Monday and I dont know what to do. The intership is only 10 wks but I dont want to burn that bridge. I have to make a choice by next week to either: A) Turn down my SMART acceptance at the last minute or B) Turn down my on campus job. WHAT DO I DO?? WHAT DO I DOOO??? edit: I also have a research position that starts in August at school but it is NOT paid like the intership.

That's a tough choice. Look at your financial situation. Can you afford to pass up the financial compensation? If you can, then go with the internship.

:luck:

So this job would provide the apartment during the school year? If yes you have a tough decision but id stick with the summer program its not easy to get in.You might not get another acceptance next year.
This is what I told my brother (accounting major so he dont understand). The apartment is provided fully furnished until I graduate or leave the job. Any hours I work over 20 hrs will be paid by the hour at 7 bucks. The internship is $4000 for ten wks and its my first one so I REALLY dont want to pass it up. Im leaving my job this Friday and will have to look for an apartment close to campus and a pt job when this summer is over (moved in with family for a few weeks until intership starts). My brother is saying give up the internship but I thought I would ask some premed students who understand how valuable this internship is. Any advice?

Dont burn a bridge you might need to walk over one day.On campus jobs come and go.You will have multiple opportunity's to apply for another one.Just because they higher someone else doesn't mean you cant get the job. What if that person quits? gets fired? cant work any more?

If you are really interested in Baylor's Medical School sacrifice the apartment for the internship.

I'm assuming that since you received the SMART internship that you've received the Scholarship too? I thought the SMART scholarship basically pays for all of your tuition with a living stipend for books and rent? If so, the added luxury of having a fully furnished apartment with the campus job doesn't really seem to be that much more beneficial than an actual internship in terms of applying to medical school, if your basic finances are already pretty much taken care of by SMART.

Oh No. No. They provided us free housing and a $4k stipend for the summer only but they do not pay for our tution. (Im talking about the UNT SMART) I wish they did will they did pay my all my finances then it would be an easy choice. Im leaning toward the internship though.

Yeah thats my look on it too. I dont want to burn any bridges and I want this experience. The program isnt with Baylor its TCOM though. My family is saying go for the job but like I said they dont know how important research is to these research heavy schools. Honestly this is the best on campus job you can get since all the apartments are extremly expensive or run down. It would be cool to live where you work too. I think im going to take the research though.

Yea take the internship and enjoy it!

take the internship and be savvy with your finances.

otherwise i could see this apartment job being the primary sink hole (time-wise) in your schedule. you get the apartment only if you work there... would you just continue working there? forever? 20 hrs is a lot of time. would that cut into time spent doing other extracurriculars/activities that you need?

holding down a job seemingly "unrelated" to your career/healthcare is not a bad thing. adcoms can use it as an indicator that you manage time well, understand/relate to other people, are responsible, can be a leader, etc. do you have the potential to exemplify those characteristics, working the job at the apartment complex? or are you in a dead-end job working with a fairly well off, homogeneous population? how might you benefit this job aside from being comped a snazzy apartment and a below-minimum wage income (as you would describe to an adcom)?

from what i understand in the application process, adcoms also recognize if you have a severe financial burden from extenuating circumstances and need to work any job you can get.

from the sound of what you said, i think you have more to benefit from the internship and will be able to otherwise manage. consider this as an investment in your future rather than a cost you face now.

yeah, as i'm continuing to read through sdn, do the internship since you are trying to come back from doing so poorly gpa-wise following your divorce.

you might also have networking opportunities at your internship that could pay off in the future.

Yeah you're right. I also put in work to get this position so I would hate to give it up. The apartment job was going to be an EC. It was a leadership position so I was going to kill two birds with one stone (leadership ec and have housing covered til graduation) I have all other ECs well taken care of...except research of course, which Im working on. Eh, I will figure out something when the summer ends but I think I will take the research.
